Any funeral doom or death doom fans here (besides me)?

This new album came out this week from French band Ataraxie. In my opinion it's great.

From a tone standpoint one of the things I am really digging is the evil bass tone

The album has only four songs, and has been released on a double vinyl format with one song per side. The song length is best described as epic, ranging from 17 minutes to 25 minutes

Some pretty heavy stuff Dave-- I like the bass man -- great tone-- and all of it is good -- the 4 songs on 2 albums is very OLD SCHOOL kewl as well.

Im more of a drunk Caribbean rock n roll guy myself these days-- but for the genre these guys seem to be good to go!

What is the stylistic difference between death doom and funeral doom? I know death usually happens before a funeral, but I am not very well versed in the doom metal styles. I like some doomy bands, like Black Sabbath and (local heroes) Sahg, but I’m usually not a huge fan of growling vocals.

Ha ha ... I would say this band is between the two styles. Funeral doom is especially slow and ponderous, often with very delicate mournful parts (Mournful Congregation or Skepticism are good examples). Death doom is closer to death metal, sometimes even including some 'black metal' elements like tremolo strummed chords. Often in death doom you will have a faster part over the top of a very slow part (my own band does this a fair bit, for example I will play a slower rhythm part while our lead guitarist will play something maybe eight times faster than me, either staying on the same chords (maybe as root octave 'chords', just the root and the octave above) or a tremolo picked melody, or even sometimes the rhythm guitar will slow down relative to the bass, so that there is always a very slow part no matter how fast the rest is going. Ataraxie have always seemed to combine both styles
