Got asked to try out for a local band. here's the list they sent me:

Mr your a better man than i------Yardbirds---F#m--G-A--Em-F3m-G-A----Bm-F#m
Stand By Me---John Lennon-----A-F#m-D-E
I Shall Be Released--Joe Cocker---A-Bm-C#M-E
Shower the People--James Taylor----F-C-Dm-Bb---Gm-C-Am-Dm----Gm-C
Loosin My Religion---F-Am---Em-Am-Dm-G----F-G
If I were a Carpenter---Robert Plant----D-C-G
Travelor--Original-----------G-Am-D-----Dsus4-Csus-G

I only know ONE song (R.E.M.) out of this batch.

Should be interesting....

Just want to get out and start playing again....there's so little metal out here...

Oh, I understand. The last band I was asked to join was about 50% original and 50% predictable bar-band covers. Kind of like how "classic rock" radio is, the same 20 or so songs they have been playing over and over and over again for the last 30-40 years. I did it as a favor to a good friend who was the bassist, but it was pretty excruciating playing the covers. The originals were fun though.

No offense, a gig is a gig, but that is a tired playlist. Not one song recorded in this century?

I guess my ideal setlist isn't that recent either....

ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE (Scorpions)
CUTS LIKE A KNIFE (Bryan Adams)
YOU'VE GOT ANOTHER THING COMIN' (Judas Priest)
RUN TO THE HILLS (Iron Maiden)
HOLY DIVER (Dio)
BIG CITY NIGHTS (Scorpions)
ROAD TO HELL (Rory Gallagher)
HERE I GO AGAIN (Whitesnake)
COLD DAY IN HELL (Gary Moore)
THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY TO ROCK (Sammy Hagar)
YOU SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT LONG (AC/DC)
SUMMER OF '69 (Bryan Adams)
SHOT DOWN IN FLAMES (AC/DC)
MAMA I'M COMING HOME (Ozzy)
ACE OF SPADES (Motorhead)
WHY ME? (Planet P Project)
HOTEL CALIFORNIA (Eagles)
HUMANITY (Scorpions)

Haha, no, but at least there are some killer tracks on there.

I guess I never gave much thought to an "Ideal" cover setlist. I know a few things it would have though and some of them are not too recent...I would absolutely have to play some UFO, Kiss and early Aerosmith because the songs always go over well even if people don't know them. I made the last band I played in learn "Dickeye" by Jerry Cantrell just cos its so much fun to play, same goes with Corrosion of Conformity. I've been dying to learn some Mastodon songs, so it'd be a good excuse. And I'd probably have to work in a Dozer song and maybe something from The Company Band or Fireball Ministry just because I've been heavy into those bands lately. But, I've only been writing and recording original music with my partner/bandmate lately so we haven't learned any covers per se, though when we need a break in the studio we'll rip into a Black Crowes or Cream song just to goof around.

YES!!!!

A lot of songs I "Dig" because I reemeber what I was doing, back in the day, while listening to them...

A friend had Hotel California when it was new. I used to spend the night and listen to it on headphones for hours, trying to figure out every minute detail.

Some songs we listened to on a car stereo while sitting on top a building downtown, looking out over the city.

Others, we listened to on a boom box sitting on a wind machine in my family friend's orange grove....

Riding the freight train up to Fresno to visit friends, listening totunes on our boom box...

Memories...

Robert, don't forget the best of all RATT songs, Lay It Down!

Couple of photos from tonight's audition.

The guy had a very unique looking Telecaster-style guitar with an Epiphone explorer headstock.

All the latest in old school recording..

Had the entire crew tonight - singer/guitarist. keyboardist, bassist and drummer. The songs were dated of curse, but the people were really down to earth and friendly.

Played everything tonight on the SG's neck pickup with the gain rolled almost all the way off, which seemed appropriate for this style of music.

It was kind of wild doing the Yardbirds "Mister You're a Better Man Than I" and realizing that song was laid down in 1966!!!!

Oh, @gball, there was a Soldano 100 in the corner too..... :-)

So, all in all, it was very relaxed (very loud!) and went along very well. However, it was almost as if I had been teleported into the Beatles or Yardbirds, because it just had that 1960's feel and sound to everything. I'm 51 and the bandleader started playing guitar when he was 15 - the year I was born, so I suppose that feel is quite genuine...
