Adding Lyre Vibrola to SG

Recently I had a Firebird Epi with the Lyre--- no issues on this end .....but TBTH I didnt WAIL on it to much at all----it was SOOOOOO pretty

It was pretty, but heavy and now resides somewhere on the east coast...

I've been waiting to add one, possibly to my Firebird, or to an inexpensive SG with a wraptail. The Austin I bought to mod similar to esg's Epi has the shorter rear bout so the Maestro won't fit. I like the guitar to much to F it up anyway.

I just snagged a P90 Epi Jr last week. Maybe that one? It might be too short as well.

It may be destined for a Trucks approach.

Something like a 50th Anniversary Epiphone SG would be perfect for it. Has a wrap tail, and enough "meat" behind to bolt the vibrola plate down.
And they aren't too expensive either...

Hmm, now there's a thought. I've got one of those. Then again, I keep itat work, so I'm not sure if I want to put too much cash into it.

I just took some measurements of my 71 SG Standard, which originally came with a maestro vibrola. From the top of the low E string to the body I came up with 20 millimeters. So if you have at least 20 millimeters or more, then a Maestro vibrola should work on your guitar.

I have one too, in the TV Yellow. I'm thinking of leaving it "as is" though... They aren't too common here in Australia, as far as I can tell. TBH I actually don't know anyone else in Oz who has one! I'm sure they are around, you don't see them often. But it would be a good test bed for a short vibrola... Hmmmm....

I'd love to get a Gibson SG with a tremolo again. However, I must confess I prefer a two point floating tremolo system...

I got the Vibrola today.:) A beautiful looking thing. My youngest son is ill, so I'll be staying home with him tomorrow. I might get a chance to fit it then. I'll be sure to post some pictures of the process.

Here is my 2016 SG Standard with the Maestro added after the fact...is this what you're installing or are you adding the sideways model???

The lyre one, yes. I see you plugged the stoptail holes. What did you use, and can you re-convert if you for some reason wanted to?

The holes were only plugged on the one side and the tech used a piece of brass. It can be removed and the stop tail can be put back on.

The Gibson kit also came with a mount to use the stop tail and still install the Lyre cover piece, but without the Vibrola...like the Derek Trucks model.

And so the deed is done! And I dig it. I'm a tiny bit annoyed actually, because the tailpiece moved ever so slightly when I tightened the main screws mounting it, making it a bit off center. And I probably could have moved it a couple of millimeters closer to the bridge. But I don't really think anyone will notice when I'm actually playing the guitar. All in all I'm very happy with the results.

The break angle seems fine over the bridge, and sound wise nothing is altered as far as I can tell. No grounding issues.

I haven't lubed the bridge or nut in any way after mounting the vibe, so naturally it screws the tuning a bit when I use it hard, but it is a whole lot better than most of the things I have heard. With proper lubrication and a good setup, I think it will work very well.

As far as I'm concerned this guitar is now "finished". I dig the way it looks with the Lyre, reflector knobs, covered 57 Classic pups and the new trc. I know spending this much money on a Faded Special might seem silly to some, but I don't care. It plays like butter, sounds like an angel on amphetamines and I think it looks killer. By and by I will probably do something to the post holes for the stop tailpiece, but I'll leave them for now.

Here it is:
