That's similar to me. I pretty much ignored them my whole life and only in the last few years started paying attention to their material. I wouldn't classify myself as a KISS fan, but it is pretty obvious to see the place they have in American rock history, whether you like them or not.
I suppose since I was never one of the KISS Army or a devoted fan, I have more of an "outside-looking-in" sort of viewpoint over the original lineup versus the current one and the drama that has been part of the KISS story for years. I sort of see all sides, but don't have an ardent opinion of my own.
I wasn't into their music. I did dig the theatrical nature of their work.
I did start digging them after songs like "Heavens on Fire" and "Lick it Up" came out...
