A clean guitar has better tone:

IMG_3851.JPG IMG_3489.JPG I do a major cleanup on my work guitars when I change strings. Clean and lemon oil on the fret board. The very light steel wool on the frets, tighten the tuner nuts and lub on the saddle and nuts.
I found a German car polish that also cleans. I think it important to have my guitar and myself look the best possible. We have been playing in a very expensive club, the guests all dress nice and the place is clean well kept. We have a large group of people in our band or orchestra, strings, horns, keyboards and singers. Nice appearance really does count.

Car wax it is for me. I used Turtle wax to Blue Coral and now Derr Stuff and the way from Germany.
Fender puts car paint on their guitars and Gibson will go with what ever sounds fancy. I can't get my Les Paul in the garage and need to leave on the street over night. No big deal, it's good to go and looks like it just did a best in show in a $2.00 dog show.

BUT ITS GOSPEL----its ON the GIBSON website man--- dont remove more than 2 strings at time........

WHATS worse read some of the comments at the bottom of the page------I almost peed laughing ...

    im gonna invent some tone-stare-glasses.
    heres how i fig it gonna work :
    1. take the glass rub them against your ass for 5 min (to activate the tone polarizations molecules)
    2. wear the glasses
    3. stare hard on your guitar's body for intense 3-5 minutes
    4. jump around on one leg while singing "i belive in anything"
    and then u got improved tone.. something.. but, hey it works..
    or not...

The tone polarization molecules are activated by the reflected trapezoidal shaped light beams from the specially formulated, and polished inlays used exclusively by Gibson.
 
I just used good ol SCOTTS liquid Gold on the T-60 --- oddly the tone was unaffected.....the wood drank that poop up--- probably the first time its been "nourished" ....

NOW I DONT recommend doing that on say a new Lester --- or Sg or anything with a deep rich clear coat --- but on the natural wood beasties......it helped....might make it more aerodynamic moving through the air when I bludgeon smart arse music critics with it ;)
 
Not to be a party pooper, but I actually do need to clean my new USED NOT Ibanez guitar.
Essentially it looks like a dusty mess but the finish of the guitar is in good shape under the crud.

What do most of you use to clean off basic dusty non sticky dirt without messing up the nitro finish before applying a protective coating like wax or whatever?
