8" x mile²

I found a map of oil platforms around the area. The red star is approximately where you were, sunset beach.

Then, I reviewed your video closely:

The arrow shows the last visible bit of the southeasternmost part of the island. We can also see 3 different platforms, circled in red.

So now we need to determine which platforms we are seeing here.

Based on your video and the map I dug up, it seems as though the oil rigs themselves may not be quite as far as we originally thought either.

Which platforms are we looking at?
Eva?
Emmy?
Esther?
Edith?
Ellen?
Elly?
Eureka?

If we knew which one(s) we see here, we could possibly find coordinates, and map the distance using Google Earth or whatever.

From there, it may be possible to get a ballpark range for the boat in the video.

Wow very good point. I found this rig straight out from Sunset bwach. Note scale at bottom corner.

Interesting info.

Also, look at this screen capture from the last frame of the video. It shows the whole island.

See how it seems to be almost floating in the air?

Of course, this could be haze near the base of the island, but it is also consistent with refraction activity, where things can seem to float in the air.

I did notice that, yes. I think it's likely to be fog/smog/mist/whathaveyou, but yeah, that did cross my mind. Same with the oil rig and it's apparent size. Either it's much closer than we originally thought, or there has to be some kind of refraction happening, which is happening anyway to some degree, since the earth's atmosphere itself acts as a sort of lens when light comes through it...and then through another lens again when it enters our eye...

Occam's razor, etc ..

I think both the rig and the boat are a lot closer than originally thought

Absoultely. Maps would say the rigs are 2 to 4 miles out.

It was a hazy day and there was fog covering the lower section of Catalina island.

Yeah me too. I pulled it from Google images as I was looking for different maps that might show locations/coordinates/names of platforms, etc. There's got to be a current and accurate map somewhere!

On another note, I was hoping Google Earth may be of assistance, but when I zoom in I don't get water, or anything in/on it. I get ocean floor in azure lol

I was looking at the AIS website again and it will only show ships, not platforms. Makes me believe that platforms do not have AIS. For those who do not know, AIS is a ship tracking/locating system. Commercial ships are required to have them and any vessel over a certain size are required. Anyone can put AIS on their boat even a tiny run about, but it's not very important for smaller vessels. Most data is accurate up to the minute if the vessel is moving or recently anchored.
