Been using a laptop to record. Doing fine, but finally decided to have permanent desktop situation with dual monitors. It will be for recording only..never hooked up to the evilnet, That is the specs that it's starting out with

Hoping those specs will work. It will have slots to add more if needed. This is not my area of expertise

Huge question for the computer guru's in terms i can grasp

1)How can use my laptop & new computer be used back n forth with Reaper

2) Should i get a memory tower to organize it all

You could get a storage device called a NAS. A Network Attached Storage device can be used to share the files and serves as a backup device. Both computers need to be on the network. Your recording on can be disconnected most of the time and only connect it to share a file or backup (hence no internet). I’ve been using NASs for quite some time. There are many vendors out there for home use, DLink, WD, Seagate, etc.

If you get one, set it up in a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks), which means if a drive fails there is another with the exact same info on it.

You also might want an external USB to backup occasionally and store of site. These can be encrypted for security concerns.

Thank you !!
Still working on comprehending all this

Looks like Reaper license will need to be loaded into new computer. Then 2 computers are on same page

I do a bunch of work sitting by the wife with headphones on & would use the laptop in that aspect, not for tracking.

How would i export the whole Song to the laptop from the Desktop ? Then those changes would need to go back to Desktop. This cycle would be quite a few times a day between work stuff.

I try the videos but get frustrated..much better if i can learn hands on..could never do this internet schooling my grandkids are going through. I got to touch & learn & fail & then see why to comprehend i suppose. then the mechanics are built in of the process for retention.

You could export it directly if both are on the network. But with the NAS, it becomes another disk drive to both computers. For instance the first one I installed I mapped it to be the Z: drive. So when you export, you would export it to the Z: drive into some folder. Then on the other computer you would load it form the Z: drive. And you also have a backup since that export is still sitting on the Z: drive.

I have 4 NAS drives on my network. One, my S: drive (for stealth) is always powered off except for once a month I turn it on and copy all changed and new files from the Z: drive. Once the copy is complete I turn it off. If some jack#ss hacker try’s to ransomware my files, I’ll just give them the digital finger. :pound-hand:

Another quick question

Since i would be recording various times throughout the day as work allows, Could i save tracking from that computer, then, put it on a memory stick to transfer to the other computer? basically the new transfer would be what ever part was tracked...guitar..vocal..ect

Yes....and if you are not going to connect the new PC to the web, you can update Reaper by the same stick. Heck, you can run Reaper as a “portable install“ on a stick In any computer you choose.

It’s just a matter of where you’re going to record the tracks to that may have an effect on performance.
My new set up is not fully tested yet...I haven’t had my drummer over to try a 10 track drum recording yet. But, like the previous arrangements, I have an external(secondary) drive assigned as a destination for writing audio tracks, and saving projects to. That drive can be moved to other computers to access and work on projects. My new drive is a 1 terabyte USB-C SSD, and it seems to handle recording/writing 3 tracks at a pass without issue so far.
Point is, it’s good practice to record/write audio files to their own drive destination, and not the same drive that’s running programs and/or the OS.

Thanks ! am really surprised my laptop, geeze there is 75 full songs on there already since last October.. you created a monster. I did start to basically get it all level in Reaper..then go back & mix it all later. In the creative phase..just making sure the performance capture is right. The guitars really pop in the mix when i put a lil bit on them & EQ it properly, which will be cool in a few mnths to make it all level all the sngs mastered correctly.

Cool thing is..recording this way..it is basically at band settings & levels. Chose to record it all exactly at kick drum level..my amp can be taken to bandroom..plug in & there it is..the same tone..

This computer will not go online ever. dedicated to the Recording only

I did that for a few years, with my old modified 2006 PC tower. As far as I know, it still works. It did the last time I powered it up...but I fear eventual hardware failure(The power supply in my tower has started to show signs of its age), and have moved on. That said, it is the safest way to keep an audio workstation healthy. Some programs may require connection for authorization though. I also like the home network accessibility.
My new computer for the studio is a laptop...new territory for me, as I’ve never owned a really current laptop. Someone gave me a really outdated one once...it couldn’t even handle a web browser or internet at the time, but it would physically connect to an older piece of hardware in the studio and functioned as a meter bridge/status screen.
The laptop may turn out to be a mistake in the long run, but it is portable and currently useable.

Was really surprised how my HP laptop has done. Just starting to slow a tiny bit. Not a heavy plug in user & they do effect it the more that get used. It is nice to track then go to LR & mess with it.

Is there way

I use either a USB stick or put on a cloud drive like Google drive etc. Then jist go onljne amd download. I prefer the usb stick or for large amounts an SSD external drive.
I use an SSD drive in my computer as well for very fast access.
Oh amd backup everything as soon as possible!
