1958 Gibson Guitars and Amplifiers Catalog

According to my research, the minimum wage in 1958 was $1.00/hour and the average American income in 1958 was
$3,641.72/year....

In 1980 the minimum wage was around $3/hour. I was 21 and was offered $5/hour to start working in the business that led to my career job. I remember saying to myself: "What am I going to do with all that money?" :cautious:
I bet you found out rather quickly!

I bet you found out rather quickly!
Yes I did. Shortly after I got that job, I moved out from Mom's house, and into an apartment with my future wife. "All that money" was getting all used up... :BH:. One year later, I became a member of the Teamsters union while still at the same job and my pay doubled... just in time for the first child!

El Blasto de la Pasto... thanks for the mammaries...

I like the Les Paul special for $179... That's one hell of a guitar for that kind of money.
I think the price for a Telecaster was about $145 or so... prolly a bit more for a Strat.

Only a Gibson is good enough... You won't part with yours either... (oh yea, these slogans came later).

Interesting that they were still offering the EB-1 Violin shaped Bass in this catalog.
Anyway thanks for going to the trouble to prepare these pages for posting...
It's great to get in a time machine and travel back, but safely.
...Even if our money's no good. Think of your dollars as dimes.

I'll have a custom, a goldtop, a special and a junior of each colour, please. Good value at about $1000. Although it sounds less good as 10-20% of annual salary...

As other's have stated, I looked into the pricing then(ish) and now for the SG/LP jnr and special, and if you factor in a case then they are same price or very slightly cheaper today for those LP/SG models between 55-ish to 63-ish and now. I always find it quite strange when folks rant about the prices of $1500 Gibsons as being so expensive because it hasn't really changed in the last 60 years; pretty consistent pricing. If anything, the SG standard has been underpriced (until 2019) in the last decade or two.
