Difference between WGS Veteran 30 and Retro 30:

I think it's a bit of a risk, running at full power, on its own. Spec'd at 30 watts, it would be better suited in a 1x12 cab running along with the stock speaker sharing the load in that scenario.

No problem at half power though. I would tape a cap over the pentode/triode switch, once set to half power, though.

Ya, I thought about that....I really like the 55Hz, but wish it was offered in a 40 or 50 watt...

Problem Solved!!!!!

Robert,

You can still order the 50w Reaper with 55Hz cone by simply ordering a Reaper HP, and specifying in the “Notes” section of the order “Request for 55Hz cone - TE”.

Expect up to a 5 business day lead time from the time the order is placed.

If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me another email.

Thanks,

My 2x12 has a Reaper + Reaper 55hz. I've used it pretty regularly over the last, I'm guessing, ten years to play Motörhead, Tool, STP, Alice In Chains, Maiden, Metallica etc.
I like it in the studio, on top of my V30 loaded Recto cab. It makes a sweet 6x12 stack.
The only thing that tears me away from it, lately, is my newer obsession with the Green Beret pushed by a low watt amp(5-18watters)

50 Watt Reaper 16Ω with 55Hz cone.... :-)

Thanks for the tip on the 55Hz, Don...

Yep. They have always delivered to me in a good and timely manner. Not that I've ordered anything "custom".

Shoot, Man! I don't have anything "normal." Everything is custom made, custom wound or hand made...even my doubleneck has my birthdate as the serial number... :-)

Progress!!!

Finally opened the Reaper 55Hz today! What a nice speaker! Very well made and fast shipping too! WGS is literally just down the road from the family's 300 year old farm in Cadiz, Kentucky.

I have a Marshall MG50 that I bought in 2002 for music students. It's been up in Mom's living room for years. I told Pop I was going to send him the Celestion 70/80 I pulled out of this DSL40C originally and have him install it in the MG50, replacing the "MG Series" speaker that came in it.

Should be a nice upgrade....

Guess what? Tonight I realized I been playing this amp all this time on 8 ohm with a 16 ohm speaker. Don't know how I missed that....

How many watts?
It says 30?
(Not a problem at half power)

What an incredible change!

I used to run so much bass and mid frequency boost to get e rich, full sound....now I have almost everything rolled off to either Noon or 2'Oclock and the Gibson SG sounds absolutely huge.

Individual strings sound like chords. The "edge" is still there when playing through a chord, such as the C-Clamp G, but that almost too bright "bark" has been subdued.

It's a much more articulate speaker, and yet, when pushed hard, the bottom end never gets thick or muddy.

Best upgrade yet...

I'm glad you are happy with the new speaker, but I am wondering how the stock one would have fared with the impedance matched.

Wont hurt nothin unless it was the other way around.

I've read a lot of posts about this so I can only repeat it; I'm no expert.
It's preferred to NOT have a mismatch, and not use mismatching to chase tone.

The way I have come to understand it is with a SOLID STATE output section, a higher impedance may be ok but a lower impedance will pull a lot more current, overheat and damage things.

A TUBE output section, when pushed hard, a higher impedance can over work the output transformer, cause flyback voltages that can damage the OT. Output transformers are expensive.

Low impedance will pull more current and work the power tubes harder, shortening the lifespan. I dont recall the extra current draw being enough to put the PT in peril, but I suppose it could.
Also, the extra heat produced may cause mischief as well.

Good question!

The sound was ok with the 90 watt Creamback in this one, even at the 8ohm setting. All my posted videos were recorded with the mismatch. My second DSL40C still has the stock 70/80 and I have another Reaper 55Hz on order for it.

I even tested the Reaper 55Hz on 8 ohm and it still blew the 90 watt Creamback away. No comparison.
