My JCM800's V1 preamp tube went microphonic. Started searching thru my stash. Found a (NOS) JAN Philips 12AX7WA. I forgot I had one of these old Badboyz! Don't even remember how or when I got it. My other more modern tubes sound fine, but there's a something special extra I hear with this one. I like surprises like these... :dood:

More gratuitous porn?

OK...

The dynamics of such a story are unknown to me but I'm glad you're a happy camper.
I guess with more ear training I'll get there :-)

that indeed is a GREAT find. I have several NOS RCA 12ax7 I am sitting on. Waiting for the right time to use / or sell for a proper price.

It's easier to tell the differences when your running the amp loud and hard. If you're not pushing the amp, you won't hear much, if any, difference.

The supply of the more common types of (NOS) tubes for guitar or bass amps, are drying up. Current prices reflect that. In general, your NOS preamp tubes in a circuit will probably last more than you, or me. I say, use them now or sell them now. Those NOS RCA's are a $100 to $175 these days!

Congrats on the SCORE Sysco!--- er the FIND --- er the finally scoring---wait no that is wrong---

I have a very nice recently acquired "Stash" as well............

Since we're talking about stashes: That's not what that's for, you put your weed in it. (Sorry, someone had to)

Wow i wish i had a few of those 100$ tubes .
10 years ago, the price was less than half of what it is now. At the time, I didn't mind spending a few extra dollars on NOS preamp tubes. Nowdays, it doesn't seem to be worth it. Unless an insane deal comes up, I think I got my corksniffing with NOS tubes under control.

Always nice to have a stash - particularly when you forget what's in it and have a trawl around finding something exciting.

The tube is cool, and the amp too.

More details, please. What is it? A DSL 40 or something?
It's a 1982 JCM800 50watt 2x12 Combo (Model 4104). I've had this amp since 1986.

The only original parts remaining on this amp, is the cabinet, grill cloth, Marshall grill logo, and chassis.

The baffle board has been replaced. Every single component has been replaced. The PCB has been replaced with a point to point turret board.

The circuit was rebuilt to "mostly" stock values. Marshall got it right the first time. I added features like a bypass switch for its infamous bright cap. A Resonance or Depth mod with a pot at the back to enhance bass response. A second Master Volume control at the back, that controls the overall volume after the phase inverter (PPIMV). And a solid state style effects loop module that works excellent. Then there's the killer speakers: A pair of Scumback M75's, which is their version of the Celestion G12M-65 Creambacks (My favorite type of speakers for old Marshalls)
