Jangly/Twang 'G' String:

I read this whole thing along the way but dont recall - did your try lowering the pickups a lot, then come back up little by little if it stopped?

I had a similar with staggered pole strat pickups with just the neck. too high - did not have the tremolo effect as a give away either.

Yes. No change with even a huge drop in pickup height.

I am curious as to how the placement would cause one string to make the odd sound. Why are we not hearing oddities in the other strings?

The plain 'g' is already a problematic string in general, and it is the only one that seems affected by the energized bridge pickup. it's similar to how a 'g' string behaves on a Fender...but less dramatic...

No clue about a G string and Fender. I will take your word for it.

On a similar vein, I was playing my New SG Std with the OEM tarbacks and my Faded SG Special with the 490's and both guitars are way different animals.
With most of my guitars, my setups are fairly close as far as string heights etc, but I believe the 2 guitars with the lowest setups are the SG STD and the LP Std.
I believe I can attribute differences to a number of factors. First, I am thinking the Std has 9's on it vs 10's on my Faded. 2, the differtent Pups, and 3 the difference in setups.
Since the Faded has strings set higher, I believe they are free to vibrate more so hence it seems a more chimey guitar. The Std is very low action but intonation is so accurate, I hate to move the bridge up any. ( Tough problem to have huh)

Anyway, I had a nice practice time.

I got three Gibson scales set up identically... :)

The notes are cleaner with slightly higher action...I agree.

Wow!!!!

These D'addario .017" wounds are the real deal. The core is .009" and the outer jacket measures .0165" on the money. they bend just like a .017" plain steel but they sound much fuller.... :-)

Ok, no intonation change necessary going from .017 plain to .018w. However, going from .017 plain to .017w, I was flat. Took about two full turns to bring it in with perfect readings 1st through 12th frets.

The jangle is gone and the tone is richer and fuller, but the volume was a little lower on the wound 'g' so I adjusted the pole pieces woth a VU meter and ended up with this:

Overall it was a huge improvement in tone and clarity....
