Hello,
I'm new to the forum. I actually came across it by google image searching for Vox cloth and found a post from @Hackmaster, which is what led me here.
I'm in the middle of a few projects at the moment, one being a Brian May Red Special build... (I'll post a couple links and photos below)... but I'm also looking into the possibility of either re-covering one of my current AC-30's or building a cabinet to my own specs and filling it in with pieces as I go.
Ultimately, what I'm after is a cream/tan/fawn tolex cabinet, reddish/orange grille cloth, leather handles, brass vents... then probably whatever badge and piping I can get my hands on. I'd eventually like to fill it with Celestion speakers... either blues, greenbacks, or even silvers. As for the head/amp, I may have to be open to what ever comes along.
At the moment, I own two AC-30's. One is a 2003 British made TB with blues and the other is a 2008 Chinese AC30CC2. Originally, I was considering just re-tolexing the CC2 and making it easy on myself, but a friend recommended building my own cabinet. I've been leaning this way so I can have it exactly as I want it, but it sounds like a lot of effort. I could also just go in between and make a cabinet MOSTLY to the specs of the CC2, so it will fit the CC2 head, then make the little changes I want. But then, I end up with an empty cabinet. That seems somewhat wasteful.
Anyway, I'd be happy to hear comments from anyone who has done something similar or anyone who has experience in this area. Especially with regard to finding period correct materials.
Here are a few photos of the sort of color scheme I'm looking to mimic.
