So, it was my birthday last Wednesday, I now have no guitars and only my Yamaha THR10 which I use as a computer speaker thus I thought I'd treat myself. Was very close to ordering a 2017 SG standard on Monday to have it arrive on Wednesday, but decided to wait til the weekend and visit the strore with a mate (who's a much better player than me, and a bit of a cheap git when it comes to paying $ for guitars).

Yesterday, spent a few hours at Buzzbee - one of the best stores I've ever been to. Prices are pretty high in Korea though.

This one was nice, but without a case and for $1400 it seemed way over-priced to me. In fact Fenders are now just crazy prices, imho...

At $1840 for a Fender standard/professional they just seem terrible value compared to $550 for a Squier Classic Vibe which to be honest I liked as much!

At current prices, even though I didn't want a tele, the guitar below is excellent:

So, moving onto the Gibsons, I was seriously considering a LP, so looked at these:

$730 seemed a decent price for this 2017, but it just didn't do it for me:

This tribute didn't do anything for me either:

They had these in all 3 colours at $1650, but to my surprise (because I thought this was a real potential purchase!), they just didn't do anything for me:

Maybe, I'm not a Les Paul guy?

BTW, they also had this at $1700 - it looks nothing like the pictures, it is a repulsive shade of mustard; I didn't even pick it up: (n)

So, onto the SGs, and they had pretty much all the ones I wanted to look at:

I was surprised how nice the 2018 SG special looked and played (and the mini-buckers are very nice). But at $1215 with a gigbag it is not good value imho when an 2017 SG standard with a case is $1240.

The 2018 standard was $1,700, and even though I much prefer the 61 pickups to the 57s, I wouldn't consider it at that price!

So, and this is the one I was expecting to buy, the 2017 standard in cherry. Yeah, it looks nice, is 90% of what I want from an SG (I prefer a batwing pickguard and 490R/498T, but not many 2016s around and they cost $1200 without a case!), the $1240 price is ok, the case is nice, it's well made, I like the locking tuners, the finish and grain were nice, but it only felt ok in the hand and did not blow me away when held before plugging it in:

Now, I don't think the amp helped, a Marshall tuber at lowish shop volumes always sounds average at best to me, and when I've tried SGs in shops via a nice Messa or an AC30 they really come alive, but it played ok and sounded like I expected the 57 pickups to sound - tuneful, nice and ideal for folk music rather than punk/indie rock that I like to play; but to me, that's not an SG... 57s (especially the 57+ in the bridge) are better in a LP to my ears (I understand other folks will have very different opinions, so many SG owners love the 57s, and they are right for them). My mate was pretty unimpressed by the playability and sound too. We both thought it was nice, but it did not excite a visceral reaction in me.

No success. Nothing deserving of my money, but it was an interesting exercise in how important going to the shop and playing/feeling the guitar in your hand is. Frankly, I preferred my SG faded to the 2017 SG standard in all ways (excluding those nice locking tuners).

Thus, not a new guitar day (NNGD).

Before leaving the shop and going for some beers (this was around 4pm, and I ended up drinking until 7am and getting the morning train home from Seoul...).

I thought we'd try the $1600 SG junior; my mate looked at it (he doesn't play or know about Gibsons) and was not impressed with the single puppy design, but as I walked around the shop and just looked at the other brands in case anything took my eye, which they didn't, he plugged into the rather dead sounding Marshall and started playing:

The bite and dynamics were amazing, and you get a nice range of sounds from dark to bright by bringing up the tone knob. My mate, who does not spend big money on guitars reckoned it was the best playing sounding guitar he'd ever played and worth every cent of the $1600 pricetag - to him, it was on a different level. To me, it felt and sounded like what you'd expect a high end custom shop 50s/60s reissue to be. It had a fast neck, set up low, set up perfectly, looks great, and the dogear P90 blows away any humbucker loaded SG I've played (&, I've gone through 490s, 57s, 498T, diMarzio 36th annis, the Angus Young, and many others in my Epi and Gibson SGs over the last 4 years or so).

But, at the time, I couldn't justiy the price, so I didn't walk out the shop with the guitar.

If you get a chance to play one, you really should.

In the mean time, I am considering whether I should also get the 12" 4w Vox or is the AC10 just too much for my small apartment???

The wife is back on Friday, so I am gonna spend a couple of days thinking about the guitar, the amps and then make a decision on Tuesday or Wednesday! :hmmm:

The voxes...........yes-- and no the 4 watt (does it have a switch to lower it to like 1/4 watt if so DO IT!!!

There's no power switching, but when I had that little 5w buggera head (like the one you had/have), I found that I much preferred the sound on 5w fully driven, but just controlling the level with the volume/gain knobs to the appropriate apartment levels.

^ yeah, I just watched that, and this one:

I'd really love the AC10 -, but that's just being silly, I know...

BTW, the prices are:

AC4C1-12 = $410
AC10 = $535
AC$C1-red 10" = $335, but I don't think this amp (small, good looking and lighter as it is) has the sound of the other two; but maybe it'd be fine for low volume playing in a small space?

I have never played a 12" AC4, but I'm pretty happy with my 10" AC4C1-BL. I would guess the 12" provides a less boxy sound. As for the power, mine is MORE than loud enough for living room practice... It has a master volume, so I can get a decent crunch at a reasonable level, but if you prefer cranking the amp properly to get the nicest possible driven sound, you might get in trouble with your neighbors.

Yeah, I think that's it. When I played mini heads through my nice 10" ENGL cab they just sounded so good - and the reviews I've seen of the 3 baby tube Vox amps really rate this 12ër. Vox amps just sound so good with SGs, imho.

Here's a good sample:

Grumpy, thanks for the lesson is self control

Thank you. However, I doubt I will get to the end of the week before buying a new guitar! :celebrate2:

The way you described that SG Junior kinda justifies the price, IMO.

40 years ago, I got my first SG. A used '70/'71 Standard (Walnut colored), which I still have today. Paid around $280, I think. But before I bought that one, I had tried another used SG at another music store. I remembered it having a darkish Heritage Cherry finish. When I demoed it, I was immediately awestruck in how it resonated and sustained. Due to my immaturity and inexperience, I didn't acknowledge that this other SG was a better guitar. The $400 price for it was the determining factor. 40 years later, it still haunts me!

That '18 Special with the mini-buckers looks real interesting, too.

I love VOX amplifiers. I have 2 battery operated VOX DA5 mini-amps in both black & white tolex and they sound great with amp modelling and built-in effects. I also have a VOX PathFinder amp which I believe is 35 Watts. It's one of the best sounding amplifiers I've ever heard for it's size and it's not heavy to carry around.

Those Pathfinders are coool I had one ....and even had the BASS version one at one time--- good kit
also had the DA5 mini-- probably one of the easier to use mini modeling amps.

CRAP --- now I want my Valvetronics VOX hymbrid 20 back.........WHY WHY MUSTY YOU ALL BLOW GAS MY WAY !?!?!?!?!?

Can you guess what's underneath my Vox PathFinder...a Peavy Minx 110 bass amp which is another great amp IMHO...it has that perfect bass sound and I like it very much.;)
