The "SG"

This thread has inspired me to start cleaning up the 1981 one I just got.

Needs a new input jack, pickguard and pickup ring screws are basically dust, pickup rings are cracked, truss rod cover screw is loose, tailpiece is scratched, needs a real once-over with Virtuoso, and most important could use a set up. Going to order parts and get started.

So I ordered some 2M x 10mm black oxide flathead screws. Then I got to wondering if those were original to the guitar (restoring old cars implants that process in my brain). Found this picture online and it sure doesn't look like black oxide screws to me. Does anyone who had one of these new remember, black , chrome or stainless ?

I remember that ad from back in the day!

Anyway, I can’t speak definitively about “The SG”, but the original screws on my ‘74 SG are the silver-colored ones, if that helps.

For comparison, I bought a brand new Gibson SG Faded (Serial #03023435) in 2003 for $765.00

Gball, that's a great looking color combo! I used 00 steel wool and 3M Fineness-it Machine polish on the tuner keys, washers, and nuts.

Hah, that's the MacGyver in me....

I received all the parts and gave the guitar a once-over last night. Replaced the input jack, broken pickup rings and all the related screws, new tailpiece, new screws for pickguard and cavity cover, repaired loose TRC screw, and gave it a light polish...in the end I decided to leave most of the patina on it, somehow felt like it was leaving the meauxjeax intact. Took just a bit of the tarnish off the tuners and just enough of the fret cheese and grime off the fretboard and finish to make it feel smooth and that's it. Gave it a setup and it plays and sounds like a million bucks.
Was too dark by the time I finished for a decent pic, but you get the idea.
