Gibson HP - worth it or not?

They don't come around that often and you'll probably always be able to get hold of a Standard. But even if the Jr. is a very cool guitar, I would get the guitar I knew would most likely be my number one axe first. Personally that would be the SG Standard or the LP Goldtop.

Yes, that is a good point; the standard would be the best buy or a goldtop if it blows me away and I justify spending an extra $700 or so.

$400 more for a Junior than a Standard? You must be in some kind of upside down land ...

Juniors as supposed to be cheaper guitars

Yes, that's true. It seems that these juniors are made really well, and are as good as/nearly as good as the 57 custom shop guitars that were going for $2300 a couple of years ago. They come with a case ($250 more) which I suppose goes some way to the cost, but they are absolutely at the top end pricewise and selling out at that price too - I don't think we'll be seeing many discounted ones. A standard at $400 less does seem like a better deal for sure.

This is the custom shop, seems really close to the current LP junior:

Right now (at the current exchange rate) the 2018 Junior is exactly $6.43 cheaper than a heritage cherry 2018 SG Standard in my local guitar store.:D

But, the 2017 (which seems to be equally as good as the 2018) is a lot cheaper.

Now, I've just come across another guitar which I really really like, but two questions arise:

1) Rosewood or Ebony (I really like the ebony with blocks)?

2) Goldtop, black beauty or cherry (all three look great to me...)?

They all come in humbucker versions too, but why would you. All will end up costing me about $1300.

ESP | EDWARDS | E-LP-130CD/P
ESP | EDWARDS | E-LP-125SD/P

Pretty close to the Gibson 2018 classic, but $1000+ less.

They are not lacquer which ideally I'd like although this one is available locally with lacquer & SD antiquitiy puppies for around $1450:

ESP | EDWARDS | E-LP-135ALS/RE

& this at $1100 with light lacquer & SD59/SDJB - probably a pretty decent deal; you're not a million miles away from a Gibson LP traditional for under half the price.

Yes, I’d buy the 2017 over the 2018 in a hartbeat. Different pickups too. ‘57 Classics in the 2017 and ‘61s in th 2018, yes?

The Edwards guitars (especially the goldtop, of course) look great. But in the end you KNOW you want a Gibson!:)

I do feel that if I don't get a cherry SG standard that I'll always be missing out... Just looked at the beer & guitar thread and the cherry SGs look fantastic with beer!

Most things are better with beer! The sun is out today and a friend is coming over for some barbecue and a few brewskis later.

Your typing suggests you've started already! :D

Now I am on my second beer, I might even pick up Miss Fugly (who I've been trying hard to sell). I have a plan for Wednesday, Gahr, I will post something on your beer thread...

Have a great BBQ & beer day.

Hahaha! Yes, I was typing at a busstop in glaring sunlight. No beer yet, I’m afraid. Just fat fingers. Looking forward to your Wednesday post!
