No. I think it’s a pretty standard depth.
I actually have one of the longer switches. It’s too long for the Les Paul cavity.

I have the definitive, unambiguous answer...

Seriously, using the short or long switch depends on which model of Les Paul you have. Or, more specifically, how thick the body is.
This is a shot of the long switch on my Les Paul Studio. You can see why I used the short switch in this project. The long switch comes nearly to the back of the guitar.
However, when laid on on a Les Paul Custom, you can see there is more clearance:
Just for comparison of switch cavities, here are both guitars, side-by-side. The Custom (top) has a long switch and the Studio (bottom) has a short switch.
Finally, here is a shot showing the neck joint of both guitars, this really begins to show how much thicker the Custom is than the Studio:
As for the actual thickness, at the edge of the guitar, the Studio measured approximately 1 3/4" thick and the Custom is about 2" thick.
