They're similar but not the same as mini hums. Instead of having the magnet flat along the baseplate with pole pieces extending through it they have bar magnets on their side in the middle of the coils, no pole pieces:

To my ear they sound much more like a Tele single-coil pickup without the hum than any traditional Gibson double-coil pickup. Lots of bite and upper end chime but still ballsy when you need them to be. They are pretty awesome actually.

Honestly a much nicer build and lighter as well. I love the banjo tuners and the upper fret access is just unbelievable!

It's going to take some getting used to deciding exactly how to hold it. I think I'll be using a strap sitting and standing!
 
That Firebird does look great. I've seen new 2017s like that being discounted to an affordable price recently; tempting...

Those mini-humbuckers sound really good too.
