Do you have a place where you can really open it up? If yes, buy it.

If no, don’t. They are AMAZING sounding amps if you are going for hot-rod Marshall, but need to be LOUD. A very good friend of mine who tours the World and plays a lot of open-air festivals could not use one because it needed to be too loud (outside!), he could only run it at 3-4 on the master so still had to use a pedal with it. He gave up and went back to Marshalls.

Well Chris.... No Betty for you!

We all know that Plexi knows his stuff, so if you do want it and will be playing at home, and can also budget for an attenuator, that will work.

This is what I've been reading. That they are "Loud" I was told they are even to loud for a small club...so I may be re-thinking this.

Attenuator would do the trick. Caveat: a really, really good attenuator.

Honestly, usable volume is the reason I switched to 25-watt amps. Still plenty loud through a 4x12 with the band but also able to give up satisfying tone at living-space volumes. I’ve found that any big-bottle amp needs to be cranked before it starts feeling greasy, but 84’s in particular can give you plenty of grind at conversation levels.

I have heard, but don't know for a fact that an attenuator can damage transformers on an amp.

I may just have to look for something else. But, damn that Buxom Betty sounds so sweet!

That's why the caveat - a really good one won't damage the tranny, per se, but you are running the amp at high volume so the normal wear and tear of diming an amp is going to wear things as though you are blowing the roof off the place all the time.

If you like that sorta tone maybe check out a Suhr Badger?

I'm looking to get away from the EL84 tube. The EL34 in the Friedman sounds better to me and I already have a 6L6 amp...

34's are great, arguably a better sound because the bottom end is so tight, but they need to be So. Freaking. LOUD. to sound their best that I just can't use a 34-based amp any more (or a 6L6-based one for that matter). Too much of what I like about those amps is the power-tube breakup and you are at the point of hurting yourself and drowning out a damn drum kit before they really start to grind, so I use EL-84 amps. They don't have the punch of a big bottle, obviously, but they get such sweet saturation at moderate volume it makes up for it for me. IMO Mesa/Boogie does the best job with them of any manufacturer at any price. The Dyna-Watt thing really works and really tightens up the bottom end/adds dymamics.

That's the thing, I'm not looking for much break up at all. That's why I just sold the VOX...breaks up to soon and to much...

The same can be said of my JCM 800 50 waters. On the High input, having the Master Volume set between 6 and 8, regardless where the Preamp Volume (Gain) is set... OK, past 2 at least... the amp's performance becomes much more inspiring than if I had to back down the MV to about 2 because of the loudness. Enter, my very nice Rivera attenuator... :yesway:
