PC recording

Thanks Don No O :D I knew this was going to be a What’s your favorite red wine, type of question. But I want to do the research on things you guys have tried to narrow my search.

I took possession of an old Strat today that has the best tone in my stable and I thought I should start recording and seeing what really works. So,this is my current quest of getting gear to do that.

Yes!

Oh, it will be an adventure. You'll put a mic straight in front of the speaker, record it, and then wonder what amp you just recorded, because it sounds nothing like yours. The rest of the day will be spent moving the mic around trying to find the sound.

Jimmy Page always used a pair of mics - one close in to the amp and another several yards away in the room, then blended them together.

Yes! Frustrating!

Invest in some painters tape to mark your favorite spots for mic placement until you learn by heart where you like what mic, on whatever speaker/amp. If you get in to the world of condenser, and ribbon, or even tube mics...prepare for years of adventure in learning.
One of my favorite set ups is a close mic'd dynamic, and a mid/side pair out in the room-a ribbon, and condenser paired...RVA's suggestion of a mixer would start to come in to play for that set up though. It is a good suggestion for home based recording stuff too.
Rabbit hole...

Good tips!

TBD this is a KISS operation to start. Playing better comes way before learning how to be a recording engineer

I’ve got songs recorded by a camera that I thought were OK.

PS - Behringer on order through Amazon, 5% off.

Sorry...I spent a lot of time in that rabbit hole. Yes KISS. Go with the painters/masking tape for marking the grill...a little frame around where you place the mic...so you can reproduce good results, or learn from mistakes.
A simple interface like I first mentioned and that other Don confirmed....the scarlets are well liked, and if I was looking to change...it’s the line I would be looking at most likely.

I think my son got us the Scarlett preamp and package as a starting point. It's neat looking stuff. Not sure about the mike, but good for vocals it seems. Will need a dedicated instrument mike...

OK really low level question, Don O if you have a Mesa (great amps) doesnt your have a line out on the back?
If so why not take that straight to the recorder.
I am VERY new at this recording stuff, as in never do it but thought about it new.

I am not sure what the Mesa has, but a standard "line out" would not likely record well. Even the emulated "line out" on some amps stink. The recordings I post are through an emulated line out, and although the Marshall JVM is said to have one of the better ones, I think the quality is poor, and definitely not close to the quality of tone I hear from the amp.

On my Mesa there is a headphone / recording jack with a level control only used for headphones so far, with those it sounds good.

Nope, just an effects loop out.

The plan is to use a SM 57 and maybe a SM 58 in the room to capture the ambiance.
