NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe...

I own quite a few guitars but I finally bought my first Hagstrom guitar a couple of weeks back...an early Christmas present. I bought it in a pawn shop for under $700 and I did a cash and carry deal so I wouldn't have to pay any taxes. It's almost like a Gibson ES-335 clone. It comes with a beautiful hardshell tweed case. The string action is fairly low without hardly any string buzz. It has an H-Expander truss rod which is thin but very sturdy and it runs the entire length of the fret board for lower action of the strings. The neck is sturdy and somewhat thin...maybe a C-profile or something. It feels real good and comfortable. The guitar has great sustain and attack to it's tone.

The fret board is a resonator wood composite material that looks and feels just like ebony wood. It's more uniform in density than any other standard wood product. These characteristics eliminate any dead spots or "wolf tones" and provides a stable and clear tone. The fretboard comes with block pearl inlays with rounded corners which looks cool. The machine heads are high quality and are an 18:1 gear ratio.

The guitar features a Tremar vibrato unit that is similar to a Bigsby unit and it stays incredibly in tune. The bridge is a Tune-O-Matic roller bridge so the strings don't go out of tune. To complement the bridge, the guitar has a GraphTech TUSQ XL nut which is self-lubricating for tuning stability. Here are the following specs for the guitar:

BODY:
- Material: Ply Flamed Maple
- Top & Back: Contoured
- Style: Semi-Hollow Body

NECK:
- Joint: Set Neck
- Radius: 15"
- Material: Canadian Hard Maple
- Truss Rod: H-Expander

FRETBOARD/NUT:
- Material: Resonator
- Inlays: Pearl Block
- Frets: 22 Medium Jumbo
- Scale Length: 24.75"
- Nut: GraphTech TUSQ XL
- Nut Width: 43mm

ELECTRONICS:
- Pickups: 2 X Hagstrom HJ-50
- Pickup Selector: 3-Way Toggle Switch
- Controls: 2 X Volume/ 2 X Tone

I would have to say that if anyone is in the market for buying another guitar, this guitar is the ultimate bang for the buck! Once you pick one up, you'll never want to put it down. Here are some pics.

Your wish is my command. Here's a couple of videos that demonstrate the Viking sound quite nicely.

The Guitar World video is my favourite. He gets some real nice feedback at the end.

I get all my guitars from either pawnshops or music stores. I like to feel and play an instrument before buying it. I never ordered online...yet, but I think I have enough guitars in my house because I'm starting to run out of room. Ordering online can be risky because you might get a dud and then you have to go through the hassle of returning it and so on. It seems very popular ordering online these days.

Y'know, Black...

That Hagstrom is one of the classiest guitars I've seen.

It has a real Art Deco style with that vibrato, as well as the rest of the guitar appointments.

Very nice.

Thanks Smitty! I think those are the best words to describe it...Art Deco. It does have that appeal to it. I dig the tuning pegs and the vibrato arm. The volume/tone controls and the 3-way toggle are very Gretsch like also. It has great resonance since it made from Canadian maple. Most Gibson style semi-hollow-bodies are mahogany for that warmer tone. It's an extremely well built guitar and the finish has hardly no scratches. I think it's a polyester finish which is more durable instead of polyurethane.
