The Ergonomics Of A Les Paul Guitar...

Weight and upper access are the big two. I had been primarily playing my SG when I obtained my Les Paul. So I instantly noticed the LP weight when I first played it....It's a tank. My SG was so light and comfortable. ......The funny thing is, now when I play the SG, I find it to light. It feels weird. And, the Les Paul now feels perfectly balanced.

The upper fret access is still an issue for me. I get around the fretboard ok, I just have to cater to it. There are some styles I just won't be playing with my Les Paul, which is ok with me. I have other guitars.
Bottom line, love the Les Paul!

Hey Black my buddy no disrespect to you or any other Les Paul fans here. But I have to say I don't like them for some of the reasons one of the members said here. I don't like the feel of the guitar, upper fret access. I like a guitar that fits to me. I don't want to have to fit to it. And one thing that I have tried and don't like at all is playing the guitar between my legs. I want a guitar that is comfortable standing or sitting, Les Pauls for me is not the guitar of my choice. They make some nice looking guitars, and what I have found is I can purchase a guitar that has a similar appearance as far as looks go, and what I feel plays better and sounds better and quality of build is better dollar for dollar. I know this is hard to swallow for Les Paul players. But this is why they make different guitars.

Isn't your lovely Godin Core CT Les Paul shaped? I bet you love that guitar the most Blues Session 5.;)

Good points for sure.

I guess, ergonomically speaking, a Mahogany H-H Strat with a 24.75" scale 12 string neck strung with only 6 would be ideal to me....

How about this DEVO Les Paul guitar...better cutaway for superior upper fret access...whip it good!;)

One thing about a good Les Paul, that I suppose is part of the ergonomics, is that when you strap one on there is just something about the heft of the thing that is unlike any other guitar. For me at least, LP's make other guitars feel whimpy and unsubstantial. I always feel like I am going to break my SG when I play it, for example. The weight makes a LP hang on your body in a way that nothing else does.

sort of like a concrete block eh?
I'm glad I'm not a Les Paul guy, because my SG never feels wimpy.
My SG feels RAWKOUS!

Actually, I play an electric bass that weighs more than ten pounds, so I'm
used to that weight. My SG feels great after playing that bass. I also play
a couple of Acoustics that weigh about 4 1/2 pounds, and they don't feel
wimpy either. Compared to those acoustic sweethearts, the SG feels like a
Solid Guitar to me.

Kinda yeah. My heaviest guitar is about 11.25 lbs, and there is something about that weight that feels so right.

I know this isn't for everyone either. I'm 6'4' and 220#, so I can carry the extra weight a bit better than someone smaller might, but for me that feeling of the weight is visceral and definitely part of the Les Paul experience.

My SG "rawks" just fine, but I play it differently, and the LP's tend to get the most out of me.

Not enough sustain and punch in the SG's lightweight construction. I use my Gibson SG for practice sessions when I wants a lightweight guitar, but it can't compete with a Les Paul or a Double Neck for monstrous tone...unless you are playing easy listening music... :-)

Well I'm definitely in the "love em" camp. My LP is my No.1 guitar. The way it hangs off me just feels"right". Switch position I find perfect. Upper fret access may not be perfect, but it doesn't stop me from getting up there. I actually have more of a hard time with a slide up there. Keeping the strings properly damped behind the slide while up there is something I find difficult. I'm also a pickguard on type of guy. Aside from looks its the perfect height for resting the pinky on when needed. And ergonomics aside, I just love the big meaty tone of my Les Paul. Cheers

Well, the tone is what keeps you going back for more. There really is no substitute for a Les Paul if that type of tone is what you are going for. Not even the "knockoffs" like a PRS Singlecut can bring the heavy artillery the way a real LP can. I feel they are also the most versatile solidbody as well.

The object of my final desire the CROWN JEWEL of my "collection" --- the one I still GAS for ........

They are awesome. Every one I have run across has been really heavy too. That's not a bad thing IMO.
