Lets get to know the Retirees

I'm 68, and nominally retired. However, my most recent company has re-hired me on contract, and I have two personal design projects on the go. I'm not sure I can remember a time when I was busier.

You will have to try Retirement, I don't know how I found time to go to work.

I have been teaching mathematics and science classes at the monastery for years. I can't see a retirement from that. That are hanging by their thumbs and can't afford to pay a full time professor for all the classes I cover. They have an approved college status with a BA and BS degree. These people are going to be priests and most are their to teach at private Catholic Schools.

I to wonder the same thing Don has asked......and I am not trying to start anything either---I am genuinely curios on the curriculum---IF this may be construed as a "hairy" subject perhaps we three can convene a PM conversation out of the light so to speak???

Always been interested with science teaching in religious schools. What do you do about evolution and the big bang.

(Mods, serious question, not trying to cause problems)

Hmmm...excellent question.

I’ll say one thing and then shut up. Some creation theologies actually allow for those ideas.

I don't know why it would be considered offensive for the question? We are all adults unless one side is persecuting the other for believing or not believing? So which side would be the offensive side?

Just being wise asses. come on now. you should know that. maybe?

In order to beef up my ss, I'm going to have to keep working until I'm 66. I'm 62 now. I want to see if I can bail after I get my medical at 65. I've had to reinvent myself a number of times. I want to retire and take some college courses from my old school.

(Firstly a disclaimer, I'm looking from an Australian perspective and know little of the US regulations.)
Most people considering retiring THINK they only have to work that elusive extra number of years when in MANY cases they can go now.
I've watched my friends continually putting the date back "Only one more year then I'll be able to ... whatever BS they want".
Life's a gamble, you don't have to have a royal flush or even a straight flush before you start betting. What are the chances you'll live to 66?
Old Polish saying "Eat your sweets first, you never know" :-)

When I was working I seen quite a few guys work to 65. One guy dropped dead of heart attack, hunting with his Sons he had only been retired less than 3 months, another 65 yr old died within 2 months of his retirement. And I have seen some die of Cancer before retirement. The way I see it, if you can afford to Retire go for it! Life is too short I see to many people dying off. Get out there and enjoy life to the fullest. The biggest thing I hear from people is what am I going to do, work is all they have ever known. You have to have hobbies, things to do, Its sad to see work is the only thing they have in their life. It makes angry when I see some of these guys I worked with that are over 65 that continue to work, when they have excellent Pension and continue to get benefits . I'm talking about guys here that have money, so they stay in the workforce taking jobs away from younger people with families who need work. There's lots to do out there if you want to retire to keep one busy. There are those out there that wont be able to retire, but if they could they would. Then you have the people who have money who wont give it up. I wonder if Greed comes into play? more so than just liking the work.

Session 5, you just said a lot of accurate stuff in a couple of sentences.
I've been watching them drop around me while still working and they have 3 or 5 million $ accumulated. That's just nutz!

From what I can gather from my daughter who has recently become a Christian you teach the science that fits...she is very well educated and is educating her
children very well. I think I'll ask her...

Much of what you are saying is true, but I have seen many a man who I thought was healthy keel over within 6 months to 2 years after retiring and I honestly believe the lack of something meaningful to focus on played a part...and I'm talking about guys between 48 - 58

I turn 62 this month. We’ve been planning retirement for years. The wife and I have been blessed with good careers and we are both good savers. The stock market has been very kind the last 8 years. Of course I have my bi-weekly retirement plan, called the lottery, but that hasn’t panned out yet.

I have lots of older friends who say retire as early as you can and that’s what I am planning on. Too many hobbies and a big bucket list, to wait too long before taking action.

Just the fact that I know I'm set up enough financially to walk out the door any time I feel like it and say F' this place is good enough for me right now.
It's not about the money, it's about the satisfaction I get from the work and the dreaded thought of sitting around doing "Honey Do" day in
and day out. The weekend is enough for that!

My dad retired at my current age of 58. A year later he was battling prostate cancer. He beat that and then depression set in for a short while. Then
him and mom had to learn how to be around each other 24 hours a day and set new routines...it's not always easy as people think!

Do the math Cat. Figure how much money you will have accumulated if you start collecting now. I believe that the max anyone can collect at age 62 is roughly $1200 per month. Multiply $1200 by 12 months and that is $14,400 annually until the day you die. If you start collecting at 67 the pay goes up to $1600 per month which is $19,200 annually. Wait til you're 70 and the monthly payment is $2000 or $24,000 annually. These were the rates a year or two ago when I was calculating this all out in consideration of my retirement date. Prices may have changed, but the percentages are probably the same.

By my calculations, if you wait until 67 to retire in order to gain an additional $400 per month, you will not have collected $72,000 you would have been paid from the ages 62 through 67. Hmmmmm.... $72,000 gone for an additional $400 per month? I think I would rather have the $72,000 now. Those interested in other variables like how much would you forfeit if you wait until age 70 to retire, I invite you to open up your calculator and do the math.

So now that I think that I would rather retire at 62, I know that I can't afford to. From what I understand, a person can work after they start retire but are limited to how much they are allowed to earn. I need a full time job and side job just to make ends meet now. So the bottom line for me is, I will be working until the day I drop down for a dirt nap, or BBQ as the case may be.

Evolution should be handled in grade school and I cover nothing on the Big Bang. Newtonian Mechanics. Mathematics on the level to understand Newton and his Mathematics. I don't teach theology and butt heads with science. Like in the medical school classes there is one God and that is me. No debates and only real questions. You sat in one of my classes you would want one of my trained doctor doing you heart bypass.

I know that the Catholic University and public or state both teach the same stuff. I teach at a state owned university and the medical school is not working on facts. All real all the time and my classes at the monastery are the same. When I am working in surgery I prefer to be lucky instead of good.
No one knows the difference at the end of the day.

Wav, it is based on 35 years of income and can be much more than that. My wife’s in 2 years will be close to $1900 at 62. Mine is north of that.
35 years of working? I got 45 years of toil under my belt. Does the pay rate go by how much you put in to the system or how long you put into the system?
