The more I think about this question, the hader it gets. I guess it says a lot about how male dominated guitar driven music really is.
Sure, there are a lot of great female guitarists out there, but growing up I really never listened to a single female guitarist. Ok, so I would occasionally hear a song by the likes of Joan Jett, Lita Ford or Michael Jackson (with Jennifer Batten) on the radio, but they were never favorites. Mainly because I didn’t go for the music.
I have to admit women are few and far between in my record collection. But not necessarily because of the guitar thing. A lot of it has to do with the singer, and most of my favorite singers are male. And the female singers I have listened to have usually had male guitarists.
So, do I have a favorite female guitarist? If you mean someone who has inspired me as a guitarist, I have to be honest and say no. But if I have to pick one, it has to be Susan Tedeschi. Now, she is definitely one of my favorite singers, male or female, and while being largely overshadowed by this other guy playing guitar in her band she has a very distinct traditional blues playing style. I get elements of the likes of Magic Sam and Jimmie Vaughan in her playing. And that’s not bad at all.
