Since I've been messing with this slide and watching my instructor play a Resonator...

...my interest is peaked.

All Steel or Wood and Steel

Round Neck - Square Neck

I'm clueless...

If you want to play it like a regular guitar (with or without a slide) you want a round neck. Square necks are for playing lap style. Steel or wood just boils down to what sound you want. Warmer sounds from wood, harder sounds from the stell ones.

Check out these clips:

If you're going to play on your lap, dobro style a square neck.
If you're going to play with a bottleneck slide, and hold it like a guitar, a round neck.
Wood or metal body is a personal choice.
Metal bodies usually have a biscuit bridge.

Wood bodies usually have a spider bridge.

I have both, metal body & wood body.

Tri cone is a whole different animal, with 3 small cones.

Good info so far! I want to play like a guitar with a slide...so round neck.

I kind of dig that sharp sound from the full metal body...plus it looks cool.

Any budget brands that may be better than the rest???

Square neck is played on the lap. There's an ordinary neck version you play the usual way. I got mine made for me by the guy in the Czech republic who made Jeremy Spencer's (of original Fleetwood Mac) favourite instrument. Unfortunately he passed away a couple of years back. Anyway, it's called an Amistar Stager, and it sounds great.new guitar.JPG

Mine are both Deans, and both roundnecks.
The wood body one I've had for probably close to 20 years. It was in the $300 range new.
It's a spider bridge that I put a piezo pickup in.

The metal body one I've had only a year or so. It was in the $500 range new.
It's a biscuit bridge. Has both piezo & mag pickups as delivered.
Much heavier than the wood body, but has "that look" of the old blues cats.
Both have been treated to bone saddles. Both had wood saddles when new.

I like em both.

That is very cool! What kind of pup? I have a stick on Lace Sensor. It is made for these cans to pick up every rattle. My Fender out my amp and the old in and out the PA sounds like a bad exhaust system.

It ain't mine but I sure would love to have something like that guitar. I like Teles...I have a 1952 AVRI Fender Tele I bought back in 2006. The nitro was still a bit sticky and took 2-3 years to become un-sticky if you know what I mean.:D
