50th Anniversasry Tele

It's just static electricity. The pickguard material seems to conduct it for some reason, no idea what the physics are.

It sounds similar to the static-ey thing that new nitro-finished Gibsons do for the first month/year, if you've ever experienced that. They apply a charge to them to make the finish stick better during painting/finishing and it takes a while to dissipate. I've seen many an internet thread where someone has complained that there is something "wrong" with their new Gibson cos its noisy, but if you just give it a couple months or a couple dryer sheets it goes away and they are dead quiet.

My new Gibson "static" issue persisted several months - until I shielded it. It was very strange because I could run a finger down the back of the neck and get a crackle through my amp.
