P-90s

Here's a comparison, stock 1967 SG Special with Soapbars then a 50's something Les Paul Jr. with a Lindy Fralin Dog Ear P-90, I also switched out the cap to an oil & paper one, pot's are stock. Keep in mind, I'm sitting right next to the computer monitor, also using a Marshall Bluesbreaker ( a real one) with an MXR Distortion III and a Fulltone Fat Boost. This was a goofing around video I did when I was on ETSG.

To my ears the Frahlin sounds crisper, whereas the SG sounds more buttery

Given the limited fidelity I'd say the original Gibson ones just a have a lot more "something" going on, but...I also think that is an inherently better-sounding guitar than the Jr. My buddy has the Fralins in one of his guitars and they are really nice but a bit sterile sounding IMO, so that may account for them being "crisper."

The tone short circuits my ear....I just hear high-output single coil...

OK, I'll play (and add pics when I get home).

1) Had a P94 in the neck of an Epiphone G310, sounded good but not that P90 ish; I wouldn't go that route again.

2) Had a soapbar P90 in the single jnr position (close to the bridge) in a PRS jnr style guitar and it sounded meh. Changed it to a Bare Knuckle and sounded better in every way aswellas distinctly like a P90 - lacked a bit of growl, but that was my fault for putting a 7.2 neck P90 into the bridge(ish) position - note to self: check more carefully when buying from ebay...

3) P90 dogear in an SG jnr sounds growly but cleans up; my favourite of the P90s I've tried.

Many factors about the guitar and choosing the right pickup affect the sounds you'll get, but if all goes well then a nice P90 sounds fantastic.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Has a beautiful P90 Heritage Cherry SG Classic. Every time I open that case, it makes me go woah!!!
Same for my Blue Glitter Steve Harris P Bass. That bass is so sick, I just wish pics would do it justice.

I decided to add a few clips of Similar SG Classics to mine. Some with Stock P90's and others with Aftermarket
