$20K In Guitars...

I'm surprised you couldn't sell the Kauer at $3K. $2100 is ridiculous. If I was Doug Kauer, I be depressed.
So many great builders out there with no name recognition, which is part of what people want for their money. I am often surprised how many seasoned guitarists have never heard of Tom Anderson, who is one of the larger non-production guitars makers. Similarly, Knaggs and Thorn are only known by a select few, but extremely respected. My Gadow guitars are amazing, but unknown by most.

Not for one second would I call myself a builder but you and I can assemble a kit then upgrade it into something special.
I put a 12 string 335 copy kit together, then changed it to 6 string. Upgraded all components, now it's very special to play and listen to. It looks ugly but does that matter?

Looks nice to me! Yes, there is real gratification to making something all your own. I always feel like my modding platform is my empty canvas. However, I will always admire those who start from scratch, just a few planks of wood, glue and some tools.

That is true...it seems everyone just wants to drop $5K to $10K on a Gibson Custom Shop...and many of the guys never play them...I don't get it.
A hand made custom built guitar for $2K and nobody is even nibbling...and it's frigging beautiful AAAA Maple cap...

You need to find something interesting to put in those empty holes...let me think on it...

Agree and I've been collecting some timber, big plans, no experience and no time limit.
I'm a man trapped between two worlds, in one I buy nice stuff and love it. In the other I know it's about the feel and sound, stuff being pretty.

Truly foolish. Trust me, In all honesty, I have been tempted many times by that guitar. However, with my current number of guitars, both botique and inexpensive (and the number has grown substantially), I have trouble justifying it. I continue to try and find a reason before it is gone, like a nice big settlement!
