Broke a String:

Nice! I am surprised to learn your tone was unchanged!
The pickups know vibrations not mass of source of the vibrations. Really I could not tell from the recordings from 10's to 7's and no one else could. My friend Karen has a studio and calls for a background music or a song for a singer. Her ears are so keen and she can not tell. My hands can tell, now after two or three hours of playing my hands are fine

Here's the result of 4 hours with .010's....IMG_20161001_4833.jpg

I hate few things in life but strings makers that just lump the strings in a ball with little or no separation. D'Addario is a pain to even pull apart and the coloured balls are for the mentally weird. I am mentally weird but not enough to like coloured balls.

I like these Coloured Balls (incidentally in black and white this time):

I have used EB's Slinky Top / Heavy Bottoms. those are 10-52. Only guitars with out them are my 2 new Gibson's, the '17 SG and the '59 Reissue LP JR.
Even my original 59 Melody Maker runs 10-52 with out any stress to the neck.

I've been using the EB Hybrid Slinky .009's which have a .046"/.036"/.026" E/A/D.

They feel very light on my Gibson SG. Not sure I want to go that light on my Doublneck so I'm thinking maybe EB .010's on it...???

I think you just ran into a dud string. I have been using D'Addarios for over 3years and yet to have one break. And I pick and strum pretty heavy at times. I use the Nickel wound 10-46s. Personally I didn't like Ernie ball played them for a week then replaced them. That's why they make different brands and styles comes down to personal preference.

Damn son, you must be putting the death grip on that thing! I have 10's on most of my guitars (GHS Boomers) and I can go 4-5 hours and not have any of that black crud or tear up my callouses.

I'm not a skilled very feather light speed demon like Yngwie. I'm more like a T-rex - heavy and slow - but very deliberate. I play rellay hard to get the tone and attack that I crave. It has nothing to do with proper technique, just ham fisted I guess???

I swapped the doubleneck over the Ernie Balls again. Better tone gauge for gauge to my ear....
