Great Front Men

For me the essence of the front man is all about voice and presence. He definitely has to be the one you watch. But I hate theatricality and camp - you can keep the spandex. That's why I go for Rodgers, not Mercury; Knopfler, not Van Halen.

I don't even have to be up front - for a fee, I'm happy to be, your back door man... :-)

Here is a perfect example...spandex, poor raspy voice and bad theatricality...please don't go deaf and blind Don...and don't hate me...

I always liked these front men.

BB King, Albert King, and one of the best concert performers and total bands I ever saw, Joe Cocker
 
That list is pretty good, especially Joe Cocker. I saw him a half dozen times in the early years - never did later on.
 
Best front man I have ever seen was Steven Tyler in Aerosmith's glory days, between about 1976 and 1980 (Rocks through Night In The Ruts tours). Saw them at least 8-10 times over those years and he was always amazing.

After that the thing that comes immediately to mind is Kiss. Not one person in the band as a front man, but the entire band as front man. There has never been anything close to seeing a Kiss concert in the 1970's. We're used to the spectacle now but that was a singular experience then.

Saw Aerosmith in 1975 and KISS in 1976. Both were great shows. However when I saw Aerosmith, Bob Seger opened and blew me away!

Agreed. Saw KISS mid '70's, first concert!
Never saw Aero, but wanted too. Didnt do a lot of concerts.
WAS going to get AC/DC tickets early 1980; Bon Scott dies.
WAS going to get Led Zep tickets, John Bonham dies.
I stopped after that, didnt want to kill anyone else with my luck (*Cue Albert King - Born under a bad sign, which Paul Rodgers does a decent cover of.)

Paul Rodgers #1 for me; very good singer and stage presence; I love Bad Co., and need to educate more on Free.
Not a big Queen fan but Freddie has such a real singing voice and is an energetic front man.
Bon Scott; my favorite Riff Raff.
