Leslie West:

Cincinatti Ohio 1970! This is the guitar and sound I hear and see when I think of him!

Leslie musta ATE ALL the magic tone beans to get that foogin sound out of a 1 pup DOGEAR Jr....... BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH --er and HA!

That note starting at 3:31 is exactly what my T Tops in my Epi LP sound like. Needless to say, it has that HUMBUCKER TONE I love.

It's interesting how Leslie's style evolved. We crossed paths quite
a few times when he was in the Vagrants before fame arrived.
Back then he played a blonde Guild Starfire V . He wore the
guitar way high up the way Larry Carleton does and his playing
was blindingly fast, but it was not shredding. He actually played
all the notes and always used alternate picking (updownupdown).

For amplification he used a Ampeg Super Echo Twin sitting up on
a chair in back of him. He also used a lot of volume knob swells.
(The SF V has that master volume control on the lower horn
near the pickup selector.)
It was very different from what came later.

Tony, before I bought my ES135, I was looking at thos Starfires. Nice guitars it seems.

OK!!! Now that's just my game!!!!

Ok, the tone at 0:05/0:06 & 0:15/0:16 is what I believe is the ultimate tone and I strive for it constantly.

I like Mr West but it doesn't take very good care of himself. He has sugar and he had a leg cut off above the knee. He will never stand on his own because no fake leg has a knee and he is still not doing the same bad behavior. I see his name and think the worst. He is dead and getting buried with a Dean.

I ran across this comment while viewing this clip.

"Had the once in a lifetime opportunity to spend an evening and jam with Leslie for several hours. This was 20+ years ago. I was 40 at the time and I have been trying to emulate his "tone" for almost 35 years. It can't be done!! I've got all the right gear, guitars, amps you name it -- It's truly in his hands. That deep throat-ed guitar growl is his alone. He is unique and one of a kind. Truly a monster player whose influence went into every major guitar icons structure. (Ask Joe Bonamassa or Zakk Wylde!!) Like Hendrix you can't play rock / blues guitar without his sound being in there somewhere-- even if you say you never heard of him!!!!" Lonny Horowitz MD

I agree with Robert, Examples of Sonic Nirvana come around only so often. Thankfully man has not only been able to capture it on recording, but men like Leslie can produce it with their hands and ears for us all to enjoy.

06:42 Theme For An Imaginary Western in this version and
11:54 Guitar Solo / Roll Over Beethoven are perfect examples of the power of LW and Mountain

Robert, I know you know my ears can hear the sounds the way you hear em.

Like your clip above, I hear ones like this and just know the artist kills it tone wise.

Pete Townshend from his first notes on Young Man Blues and don't forget Entwistle drivin the train.

I know this is not Leslie West, but since Adrian posted about Randy, I saw this video on his techniques. Seems like a good lesson on getting THAT sound, Randy is famous for.
