Les is More

Had the SG been introduced alongside the Les Paul of the time, I don't think it would have been an issue. But, it was introduced as a new design of the existing Les Paul, effectively replacing it.

The Stratocaster/Telecaster relationship was different. The Strat wasn't introduced to essentially replace the Tele. It was introduced as a new guitar, alongside the Telecaster.

If Gibson had not tried to redesign the Les Paul guitar, and had, instead, just introduced the SG as a new guitar, Les Paul likely wouldn't have cared one way or the other. In fact, he wouldn't have had any say, at all. Gibson could introduce anything they wanted. It's only Les Paul's name that gave Les Paul any cause (or right) for objection.

Actually Smitty the Strat was introduced to replace the Tele. But there were so many die-hard Telecaster guitar players that it developed a cult following so Fender kept making the Tele. I read that somewhere in a book about Stratocasters.
