Black Friday deal here in Korea was this 2017 SG standard for $1100.

I reckon the 2017 has some excellent features: locking tuners, lovely neck, just perfect SGness, 57 in the neck, a 57 in the bridge which is Meeeeehhhhh but I have an Angus Young PU ready to replace it which will be the perfect bridge puppy for my style of music, a lovely case, great finish and just an SG as it is supposed to be.

The last time I saw SGs this good at this price was in 2011. 2018 has upped the price with no improvements, imho, and we may not see brand new SG standards which are just about perfect at this price point again...

My error... :(

The problem was that I was drunk last night and decided to book a holiday to Vietnam with nice hotels which cost me about $1500, so I was not really willing to dish out another $1000+ today - I am not a bloody Lawyer! :cautious:

Oh, you know I’m right!

Mind you, I’ve been saving money for a long holiday (most likely a trip to Australia) for the whole family for ages, and I’m planning on this being a Christmas present this year. Could have bought a really nice Les Paul and a vintage amp for the money, but sometimes you just have to get your priorities right.

When I was a young buck, the Guv'mint wanted to send me to Vietnam and pay my
expenses. I declined to volunteer. I never served, and I am no Colonel. I respect those
who did, and have only contempt for the politicians who sent them there. There it is.

But personally, I'd rather have the SG. I would have said the same when I was 19, if
offered the choice. Have an exotic vacation, and watch out for unexploded ordnance on
Highway 1. I hear there's still some around.

I love going to different countries and have never been to Vietnam, so I thought I might as well take the opportunity - I haven't quite visited 50 countries yet, but close. When I was having a beer at a hotel close to a place I worked in Nizwa, Oman, I met an elderly Australian couple who had both been to more than 100 different countries! Had an enjoyable evening chatting with them.

Gahr is correct, I do need an SG standard (and a Memphis 339), and the 2017s seem to be good guitars at good prices. 2016s are expensive (still) and don't come with a case. The 2015s are still available but expensive and I don't like the wide necks. The 2018s have a significant price increase for nothing. Blow outs of the 2017 standard will prove to be one of those good deals that don't come up that often, imho.

Well see there isn't a dislike button :p Actually have a couple buds in Florida planning a trip to Vietnam. Suppose to be crazy exchange rate and they want to live like kings I guess on that vacation :)

Vietnam has great food, very nice people, world heritage sites, a wealth of culture, I'm paying about $60 for a nice 4* hotel on the beach, and it's -temperatures here in Korea whereas we should be at a nice 80+ degrees in Vietnam. Just a quick 6 day trip while the wife is away on a 35 day Thailand/Laos trip with some Korean friends.

&, I will still buy another SG at some stage, maybe an Xmas present to myself?

I am stuck on SG's. I got this MIJ Ash Strat with a USA loaded S/S/S pickguard and have been playing for a while since I got it. Just never could sound right to me. Pulled out the SG from hibernation and it's like Foook that Strat! I just need a HB in the bridge I think :p

I just need a HB in the bridge I think

The best HB I've heard in the bridge of an SG is the Gibson Angus Young - just lovely rock tones. I also like the 498T, but I'm not to subtle with the bridge puppy, I just wanna use it as an overdrive; more noise and power. Not at all fond of the 57+ in the bridge position of an SG although the 57 sounds perfect in the neck, imho.

I really looked forward to my MIJ Fender tele, but was underwhelmed; frankly, my fugly Cort tele (which cost half the price) is a better playing guitar. The MIJs stick to the original specs such as the 7.25 radius and the crappy bent steel bridge whereas the Cort updates to a compound radius neck (bloody fantastic) and a Gibson style bridge and tailpiece.

We do have this though... (n)

My SG has the 498 set in it (2016) and looks like you could get a left over 2016 for $999.99 right now :p

This is what I have and I got to say I absolutely love it. I have added a Bigsby to mine ( which reminds me I need to post pics) with a bit of help from Hackmaster. I also added Kluson Locking Tuners.
