Band Frustration:

I have a similar sonic problem in the Pink Floyd band I am in. The other guitarist has never been in a band and is a computer guy by trade.

He runs his guitars through a computer simutation thingy into studio monitors. The vocals and electronic drums also go into these same speakers. Certainly not ideal for a vintage David Gilmour sound.

I suggested he run his computer stuff through his Fender amp, as the speaker is voiced as a guitar speaker and not a reference speaker (if that makes any sense-I'm not too up on modern processing and stuff).

Well he got pretty defensive and I just gave up.

If his simulation is also modeling an amp and cabinet, using a flat-response, full-range (FRFR) speaker is actually the preferred approach.

I get where you are coming from. I just have a hard time understanding why an obviously better, cleaner, quieter way is not embraced once demonstrated????

Short, blunt answer?

Because he doesn’t see your way as “better.”

Since he said he’s using the guitar amp for EQ, your solution had the consequence of removing his EQ. Also, since he can stop the buzz by touching metal on the instrument, very possibly he doesn’t see it as a problem as long as the bass player keeps her hand on the bass.

I’m not defending using the guitar amp as an EQ. I’d just get a real EQ! And kudos to you for tracking down the problem. But, removing the noise also took away some functionality he wanted.

So, a workable solution may require more investigation.

It sure doesn't sound good to me. It sounds like bad cell phone recording distortion, not like a real amp.

Everyone who has heard it kind of winces at the sound. I don't know. .. As I said I'm not savvy with computers and modelling.

I will continue using my Strat, Micro Terror through my analog effects and 2x12 and sound like a real guitar and not a bunch of mosquitoes farting in a tin can I guess.

Grrrrrr!

Send the amp to me. Robert.
Shreddy, Tell your guy he needs to watch this......

Ask him what all those big black boxes are and why he Pink Floyd used those big things and not a computer and monitor and see what he says.

Hiwatt amps & WEM cabinets |

– Hiwatt DR103 All Purpose 100W heads with Mullard 4xEL34 power tubes and 4xECC83 pre-amp tubes. Controls for normal volume, brilliance volume, bass, middle, treble, presence and master.

– WEM Super Starfinder 200 cabinets with 4×12” Fane Crescendo speakers with metal dust caps.

David had over ten Hiwatt heads on the Dark Side of the Moon tours in 1973-75 and he always performed soundcheck on them all himself to make sure they sounded right. A roadie tells a story from one of the shows that David complained about one of the heads but no one could hear a difference. Annoyed, the roadie carried the head backstage and brought it back. David replied, “Well, this is the same head!” and the roadie had to replace it with an apology!

I don't have a photo of the Sunn bass amp, but I will snap you one...this is just a sample of the stuff in my corner...

You can see the Fender bass amp at the bottom of the stack. He told me it had a bad input jack, but a new cable "fixed" it.

Not sure what's wrong with the Sunn bass amp. He has 3 Crate amps that the clean/overdrive switch doesn't work. I'm pretty sure these are "Crab Style" switches on a PCB.
