Birthday Beer:

You've done well IMHO, retired etc. When I was 52 I had 3 years of work still in front of me.
Have a blast, it's your day BUT take time to look into her eyes and say "Thank you", they like that kind of stuff :)

I retired from the police department as interim chief, on March 11, 2011 at the age of 46.....

Is that a normal retirement age in the US? At the moment 67 is the age in Norway, if you want your full pension. But it will likely increase to around 70 by the time I get old enough...

Most police departments here have what is known as "safety retirement. " i was fully vested after 10 years and it provides full retirement after 20 years of service, even though you could continue working past that point.

That doesn't include privately held, fixed index retirement annuities, still not quite ripe for harvest...

In a nutshell: Retiring thru a USA government funded retirement program, which is called Social Security, the magic age used to be 65. But in recent years, due the forecasting of not enough revenue to fund this entitlement, the full retirement age has variably been pushed back depending on when you were born. In my case, I'm 59 and full benefit retirement age for me would be 66 years and 8 months.

However, I actually retired 3 years ago myself with a private pension built up thru 34 years of working with a couple employers that were unionized thru the mighty Teamsters Union. When I turn 62, I will apply for "early" Social Security retirement, which comes at reduced benefits. But that's fine for me.
