Another guitar refinish

Had an old friend send me a trashed guitar, damaged and missing parts.
He hated the color, understandably so.
Gave me free reign over the results. So I started to remove the ugly and do my thing.
It originally had single volume and single tone with cheap push pulls.
I plugged one pot hole and spaced three even ones.
Then the body work...

Then we decided on a nice medium blue color.

So after days of wet sanding from 320 on up to 3000 grit, I blew through the edges... Curses Muttly!
So back to the drawing board.

By now I was getting a good buildup of paint on the edges. Thought I was home free.
Had a nice smooth gloss coming out and then I did it again, I blew through the top edge of the body while
working on the sides. This time I saved all my hard work and painted a faux binding around the edge where
my mishaps kept occurring.
This is the first mock up with the faux binding, after setting the new chrome pickup rings, bridge plate and knobs in place.

Bingo! It looks great, adds some detail and covers up my booboo's.
The original pickup rings were black plastic, thought the chrome would add some needed bling as well as match the bridge plate.
Then I installed a new 3 way switch, wired up the three quadbucker pickups and started to make it look like
a guitar once again.

And finally some reassembly.

It has a Bourns 500k push pull pot for the neck & bridge volume through the 3 way switch, and another
Bourns 500k push pull pot in the middle for the middle pickup volume. The tone pot is just a standard Bourns
500k mini pot with a 0.046 tone cap.
The top push pull is a coil cut for the neck & bridge pickups and the middle push pull is a series / parallel switch
for the neck & bridge pickups.
I think my friend will be pleased with the results. Just ordered a new hard case from Musicians Friend to send it back to Ohio in.

Very nice work (of course)! Do you only agree to refinish 3 pickup guitars?
Thanks for the kind words Ray.
Funny how that always seems to be with the triples...
This was my second refinish for this guy.

Here's the first one I did for him a couple of years ago, only two pickups.

This one needed a neck reset as well. He loves it now.

A friend of mine just sold a very similar Kay Archtop on ebay - it was playable but needed work - it went for $ 200. I should have bought it.

Wow, same checkered binding, same pickup, same knobs, same pick shaped fretmarkers too.
The single pickup version of my friends guitar.
Hell yeah, I would have given $200 for that in a heartbeat.
The only negative is they're ply, not solid woods. But that can actually be a plus for durabilty & strength.

Wow looks great there Hack.Say is that bridge chrome pickup ring set up for a Tele by any chance ???
Yes JG. Tele Style anyway. Not sure if it would fit an actual Tele.
The guitar itself is a ZZ Ryder brand.
Never heard of one before this project.

The GODZ of Trade and Ferengi are smiling upon me--- I have a deal on for a Red-burst T-45 USA 83 PEavey--- in trade for a MIM Fender jazzz in Sunburst...... :)

Stay tuned.........This will make my bass collection almost exclusively Peavey --- except for 1 Hadean Vickers and a home made Rickenbastard lol --- oh and the OTHER Jazz bass I keep hidden as it has the signatures of the Misfits on it

the one in the middle

You guys are way too kind.
It's a spray can refinish.
Anyone here is capable of doing the same thing, I'm just neurotic about it.
But I appreciate the gracious feedback.

Sysco, your SG project will be stunning when finished.
Can't wait to see it!
