Von Herndon Double Neck:

So, after a lot of thinking, I decided to have a double neck built rather than just buy one....and one with a neck that will satisfy my ball-bat desires.

I sketched out a basic copy of a Gibson EDS-1275 based guitar, but with a 1.00" thick neck at the 12th fret and .951" at the 1st fret, for both the 12 and 6 string necks. Headstocks will be standard Gibson "Open Book" and I am having a designer create a unique "Von Herndon" Logo, in the theme of traditional Gibson script, but with a uniqueness. Not sure how the logo will be placed - maybe straight or angled, but the MOP logo will be placed onto a veneer that will later be affixed to the headstock.

I've been using Artec pickups in a few guitars lately and have really been impressed with them. I decided on the Artec Classic Plus for this build - 8.0kΩ Bridge / 8.6kΩ Neck, Scatter Wound, Alnico 2 AWG 42 wire, nickel covers.

The guitar will be wired with both necks having its own output jack, so I can run each neck through it's own amplifier, like Don Felder.

The concept calls for all Black poly with nickel hardware and top loader tailpieces, much like this image:

I will post images as this project begins...

Working out the final details on the build. This is the most fun I've had yet...

All mahogany body and necks.

Black poly finish

Ebony boards - split paralleogram inlay

6230 frets over binding

Gibson Green Keys

Gibson "open book" headstocks with MOP "Von Herndon" inlay

6 String Neck - Thro-Bak "70/Select" T-Top Replicas

12 String Neck - Thro-Bak SLE-101 PAF Replicas

"Top Loader" tailpieces

Separate inputs for 6 and 12 string

Head-stocks are usually copyrighted Robert and not the body. You might want to consider a design similar to this one for your guitar builds.

Good point...and yes, the Gibson headstock design is patented, However, since this guitar is being built only for my own personal use and not resale, there shouldn't be an issue. Secondly, my inline headstock would never work on a double neck, so rather than tool up and spent about $500 on the design and patent for ONE guitar, I decided to keep the "Open Book" headstock, much like Ibanez did on the "Lawsuit Era" double neck....

Originally, I approached Halo Guitars in San Francisco about building the double neck, but the project was not well received due to the amount of labor hours involved. One of the Luthiers agreed to take the project on in his home workshop in Cupertino, California...
