I'm giving up...

Been "playing" longer than most of y'all have been alive. I still am just a mediocre player. When I watch an old video of Eric Johnson play Cliffs of Dover on an old SG... Well, my guitar will remain cased for a month. Hell, I quit for a whole year not long ago. My point? Simple....

If it's fun and brings you joy, then play. The hell with those that play exceptionally well, they're mutants anyway. Forget em. But when it's no longer a pleasure to play and it actually makes you ill to try. Case it up and walk away. If you're unhappy with it. Find something else to do.
But don't be influenced by those that are abnormally gifted or extremely well trained. They're the exception rather than the norm.

I can paint---and draw---- am I a Monet --- or a Van Gogh? nope--did I ever want to STOP painting after seeing the great masters? Nope-- do I want to stop playing after hearing a great master------nope. :)

BTw, do you hear how much rime and effort he put into getting that gopd? Years of simple playing and a gradual increase in skill.

Good point, just a poor kid who practised and practised and developed his skills to a very high level.

That video doesn’t make me want to quit anything. It makes me want to dig in deeper!

Indeed, but I'm not sure I can dig THAT deep...

If it's fun and brings you joy, then play.

Very good point.

I can't play like Mark Knopfler.
So what? Who cares?

You miserable git! Cheer up, it may never happen.

Nobody can play like him. If you play like yourself and you're happy that's great.

But, I like to listen to and appreciate talent sometimes. Here's some more talent:

I wasn't being bitter and miserable.
I meant that to me, aspiring to sound like someone else
and succeeding renders one of you unnecessary.
One of the best compliments I have ever received about
my playing was, "You don't sound like anybody else."
I'm more than OK with that.

Mmmm Monica...

I sound like a lot of everybody else that Sucks...... BUT:
I'm happy for what skills I am developing, and slowly getting better.

Those guys all inspire me to get better and steal a little of their licks and such, like they incorporated from those before them.
And they morph them into their own, even if those bits are in there.

can't do the talks like they talk on the TV And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be I can't do everything but I'll do anything for you I can't do anything except be in love with you

Are you getting all sensitive on us, Frank?
