Another Pickup Pole (Poll):

Which Pickups??

I gotta say, I don't consider this a clean tone. Granted, it's cleaner than the other two videos, and it is clean-ish, but there is definitely overdrive there.

Whether the overdrive is from just the pickup or a pedal, I don't know, but I would not call this clean.

I guess its as clean as I can stand???

Ha! I'm just bustin' on ya a bit. It's funny. I have a guitar-playing friend who will sometimes play what he calls, "Clean," but it isn't. It's just less dirty than his normal playing. He's a great guy, but he seems unable to really play clean.

This is an example of clean playing with no overdrive or dirt. Joe Pass could bury many shredders.

I kinda like both ends of the spectrum.

490R or 57 classic in the neck position sounds lovely to my ears; has that low break up growl that I really like. 7.5k in the neck is enough to drive amps as far as I wanna go.

An Angus Young Gibson (11k ish?) pickup or a 498T (13k ish?) or even the Bare Knuckle Nailbomb (15.5k ish?) all sound really nice, just with different characteristics. 11k easily drives an amp hard from the bridge position, imho.

But, Robert does like more gain from his pickups, as he says; that can sound great too.

Regarding Messas - I love these amps - I tried a low output tele (6.5k ish pups) in Bangkok recently, and the big Messa I was playing through sounded great; you could get lovely driven tones from those weedy little pickups! :D

It surprised me the Angus Young signature model is 11k when all his original guitars were 7-8k.

That's some incredible playing to be certain...and yes...that's clean...

Thanks for posting that. Joe Pass is just a guitarist's name that I've heard for 40 years now. Until now, I had no idea what he looked like or witnessed any of his skills. Many accomplished guitarists have referred to Joe Pass for inspiration. I'm seriously blown away my this guy's guitar skills.

You're welcome. Yeah. He's quite good. Usually, you'll see him finger picking in most videos on YouTube.

I also like that he is expressive when he plays.

There are two things I really hate. First one is active pickups, I had EMGs on a Strat. The wiring was cheap and the connectors even worse. There is no room for a 9 volt battery in with the pots. The battery lasts forever and when it dies an over drive pedal covers things just like a new battery.
The other thing I hate is ugly sheep.
