Gball, now that you point it out, I can see it in Ray's angles. I wasn't aware the little extra piece on his guitar wasn't a 1 pc extended ring just for those neck pickups. I looked at his again and can now see his has rings and a Tenon cover.

Yeah, it's pretty weird if you think about it. I look at the one on my SG sometimes and think "man, that's ugly" but I guess it's just the way it is.

Say, where in B'more are you? I grew up in Howard County.

I don't think it is Ugly per se,,,,,,, I just am used to hearing that a neck pup right up against the board is the Shiz as far as the best sounding place for em.

Big PG covered no trim rings....small PG gets trim rings and either or depending model/pups and to me if it sounds like I want it doesn't matter the looks.

RVA that is a smexy beast! What exactly is it?

Robert...your clip sounded good. I don't have a DSL right now but I have a Lovepedal Superlead pedal and I am getting close to that tone with it. Still doesn't stop my gas for another DSL50 though :( So what is it about the SG that you just can't get along with? I have a MIJ Ash Strat (standard MIA loaded PG) with a WD neck on it if you really want to get rid of it! :p

As far as Tubescreamers go my experience is it doesn't exactly thin it out. I think it's the mid hump though that can make it seem that way. Iuse an OD-9 & CM-2 to stack or boost at times but it's a love/hate thing.

RobV, Robert doesn't like Strats either, the scale length is not his pref. His issues with the SG range from weak pups, to hum he shielded cavities to eliminate or minimize, and that it looks like a ukelele on him cuz he is a large man.

He likes high output pups a la the ones he put in his Destroyer at 12K to 15Kohm range. The 24.75 scale length he does like however. His Ideal scale.

SUPER COOL MAN....

I don't know why, but I just cannot seem to bond with my SG, but it looks like I am stuck with it....so might as well make it sound better....I'm shooting for more of Vivian Campbell's Holy Diver tone...

The bolded is what I am referring to. I was kidding with the Strat thing, I have read his other threads on his strat and neck scale preferences. If he isn't going to bond with it and to me it seems he won't ever so changing anything really isn't going to make the guitar feel any different. Maybe sound a little different. He likes the Schecter with actives. Maybe it's the finish itself that he doesn't like? I know my Faded felt different than my Standard. Some people just don't like the raw feel. My suggestion as others have said is maybe experiment with different pedals.

As far as Vivian in Dio tone....he was a LP & later a Charvel both with high output Dimarzio's > Boss SD-1 > JCM800 & JCM900 & later JMP-1 preamp into racks if I am not mistaken?

My main point is it seems he has made up his mind the SG doesn't inspire him & he can't bond with it. Schecter's a cool to. No reason to be stuck with anything. If I get something I know I won't like it's out of here. I mean he could get another Schecter for that SG?

Sgs.........look better when they have arch top curves and funky VOX proprietary pups made by Seymour Duncan ;)

its a VOX "G"

Keep in mind that a lot of bands actually ask you to play a Gibson (or ask if you have one), which is why I am still working with it. The fact that it didn't sell on Reverb for $700/w Gator Case is another reason I still have it.. :)

I did get an offer of $450.00 but thought that was just too cheap to let it go for...

Correct, Holy Diver was a Les Paul with a Super Distortion in the bridge and a X2N in the neck...

RobV I think he mostly COULD bond with it, IF he found the SOUND. In other words, I think he mostly has tamed the hum, Issue 1. His factory pups were also super noisy, which he replaced with various options. No luck getting his tone nirvana.

The Sg has the desired scale length, no mod needed, and other than appearing small to him, I think he is on the right track, he just has to find the right car on the train to sit in. ( get that magical, YEAH BOY set of pups in it, and I think he will be happy.

Yep...

I think I could work with it, if I can get the G/B/e tone fatter...

Yeah I understand where your coming from and that sucks! Shouldn't matter the gear! You can play circles around me and if I showed up with my SG Std. & you your Schecter and they preferred me because of gear I wouldn't even take them seriously. They don't have to play it right? As far as Gibson prices I am very familiar with. The problem is I can pick up a Faded SG from $400-$500 & Faded LP $500-$600 with cases and upgrades from Craigslist almost anytime I want. SG Standards for $750-$800 in like new condition. Hell I recently saw a brand new 2016 SG Std. on the GP for $800! As I have said I have had a list of MIA Fenders & Gibsons and have never paid more than $750 for any of them. I have $699 + shipping in my 2016 Std. by way of a trade for a LP I bought :)

Also Robert....if you want to just give a hotter pedal a whirl I have a Boss BC-2 sitting here I would be willing to send you. Some people hate on it but they really haven't tried it out or spent time with it. But for comparison I have my Lovepedals JTM drive & Superlead and that BC-2 can cop pretty much the same tones as both of them. Seriously and sounds good. The Lovepedals maybe a little more articulate but that's all subjective and another convo. Let's just say these 3 stayed and an OCD didn't.

just a little more .02 , I know Robert is confident in his pedals, but in addition to my TS9, I have one of each of these. Imagine that, a 4 hole pre Master V, 5 watt head needing a distortion pedal. Pardon the Spanish in the 1st clip, but I think when he plays, it is pretty good example of the sound.

Thank You!!!! That's very kind of you!!!

I really try to use only the amp and minimize pedals too...just to keep it simple.

Cool, I thought you sounded good with it. Maybe give the Dimarzio's Viv used a shot?

This weekend, I am putting the 17k/16k humbuckers and 50's Cloth Wire harness in my old Squirecaster. That should be fun!!!!!

My friend, Fil Oliveri, seems to think my pickups are plenty good on the SG. he is suggesting I try one of his Solo Dallas Storm Pedals, which works as a kind of pre-amp, boosting the clean signal....
