Very old pic, can't get that stuff anymore. Shame, it wasn't bad.

I had a bottle of this, at a Christmas Market in Heidelberg, iirc. I'm not a pilsner person, but after being in France, which just has awful beer (I'm not a wine person either, so en France I switch to champagne), it was a welcome change. I was surprised at how hard it was to find beer at a Weihnachtsmarkt, everyone was drinking gluhwein, which was mostly awful.

We did eventually find some that was quite good, on a subsequent trip, in Switzerland. The particular stall selling it was cooking it up from scratch, and selling packets of the spices to make home-made. There were 2 ladies, and one gent (dressed as a friar, no less), and we had a nice long conversation with them. This was at maybe 11:00 in the morning, and I'm pretty sure both women were already pretty snockered.

Yes. That's a bizarre thing. Honestly, I've spoken to a lot of Germans (I lived there for a few years) and Dutch people (who also consume Gluehwein) and I've never actually heard anyone say they like it. It's as if the entire nation(s) keep(s) this tradition alive and pretend to enjoy it. Strange, in a country like Germany that has so much excellent booze on offer. The only advantage I see is that it's served warm in the middle of winter... but you could also have a nice Irish coffee, or just coffee with Baileys, etc...

It's always happy hour somewhere in the world...
