Some Hard Facts About Hard Sounds

I was only able to make it about halfway through the vid as I do find him irritating. My kid went to school to be a sound engineer and does really good work with minimal stuff, I on the other hand can make good stuff sound really bad. So maybe I should pay more attention to this stuff than I do. But glenn is a lot to take.
 
I will have to reference @Thatbastarddon because he is not biased when it comes to Glenn’s rants.
About recording tone. He does real world test’s and gets a ton of hate.
He is a actual metal engineer.

Though, I believe the power tube type can have an effect, due to the transformers to run them. Headroom and such come into play, but still…running big iron against big iron isn’t going to show as much as a speaker/cab showdown, in this context. Even speaker mounting, front vs rear loaded, is going to have an effect on the same speaker.
Mic choice, and mic position, are huuuuuuuuuUUUUUuuuuuuuge factors…can’t possibly stress that enough.

Great point !! Set it and forget it ! Once you learn the gear, the worrying is out of the equation...then you focus on capture,,creating... use your ears not your eyes to set your mic position, It's not like a weather forecast ..it is a repetitive process,,you..your mind,,your hands are what make the difference in your recorded art

He is intentionally obnoxious but very animated. The point he was getting to is all the gear makes very little difference in the recordings. The speaker cabinets are the most noticed differences.
What I really like is he crushed that BS about tone in your fingers BS.

I get the schtick he’s doing, whatever it takes to get noticed. But as far as tone I k ow the gear is producing what it does but we still have to do something with it. Here’s what Vai says and I like his verbage., and well it’s Vai. But here nor there, AI is going to wipe us all out anyway. ;)

none of my guitars sound the same that's a good thing only 4 of my amp builds sound alike
once in a blue moon will get a black face Deluxe reverb in and put a set of RCA black plate 6V6 no comparison to the 6V6 made today
it's been a issue to record my amps like they really sound like hit the jackpot with a small condenser mic 4' away from the speaker

Pretty much the same I have heard many times. I don’t have any great amp builds and while I did start a few, I have lost interest in building them. Maybe I will get back to it , maybe not.
The tone is not going to fix my short comings. lol

I agree, i visualize it in my mind then will it to become something. Same with all the cross training. Mind over matter, win the game in your head basically. Don't let yourself be the defeat of anything. I buy gear based on what EQ lane it will sit with the sum parts of all the signal chain making up where i want to be. Songs are just musical layer cakes of each instrument being in the sonic land it needs to be, same with mixing a live band. Know the role, embrace it

For instance, not a live player. Just not in the cards.
In my space , the HX Stomp is what I use. I can play any time without breaking the silence and peace among the 2 of us.
If I could I would use amps more. As I have said before, in a tiny room there just is no need for a 4 x 12.

Your situation is very similar to mine. I've been retired for almost 9 years and up until Covid hit I could plug into an amp and go loud when the lady of the house was working in the office building. Covid hit, and she was forced to work remotely (here at home). So as not to disturb her....I unplugged. She retired a few months ago but I'm not quite sure if I want to risk disturbing the peace and quiet she has grown accustomed to. I have considered the HX Stomp and other options to go all in on using headphones, but it just doesn't feel normal to not move some air.

I’m not completely averse to them. I definitely like them for a quick sketch…or for polishing/rehearsing a track performance.(I’d rather lay the keeper track down with an actual amp, and/or DI)
I was practicing a bass line with the Kemper last night.
