My new band is meeting this week!

I used to play in a jazz/blues trio. We came together to back up a female singer, broke up during Covid, and came back together without the singer just to get together and make music. That band opened up my playing and became a bi-weekly therapy session. The drummer and I would meet for lunch between jams. And then one week, Gary cancelled because he wasn’t feeling well, and next week he was in the hospital, and two weeks later he was dead.

Dan the bass player and I knew it was just over. Gary was a unique drummer and a good soul. So we stopped for good.

In the Dojo, we put some emphasis on playing live with other musicians, so in that spirit I placed an ad on Craigslist saying I wanted to put together a band with no thought of gigging… just to play for the joy of it, and surprisingly got a lot of replies.

I picked a drummer and a bass player and would still like to find a keyboard player, but the guy I had lined up turned out to be a flake, so Thursday night we’ll be a trio (although we may have a jazz flautist joining us). I’m really excited and also nervous as hell. I know I’ll play well if I can just stay relaxed and loose. Just have to remember another Dojo saying: “not afraid to be a fool.” But when you’re the only chordal instrument in the band, it’s a big weight. So I’m only mildly freaking out.

I'm excited for you, Seamus.

Best of luck to you and your band.
