Don't own a "hatchet" but I do have an axe I use to split wood for the fireplace.

I was referring to “not the sharpest knife in the drawer” in my OP.
Which reminds me I have a very sharp carpenter axe which I haven’t used yet, maybe this winter, to shape desk legs , rough shaping to be finished with hand planes
