A new band! (long story)

I used to host a regular weekly jazz jam with a drummer and a bass player I knew. The Taco Tuesday Night Music Club. We’d gather for dinner at 6 o’clock, share some food and wine, and then jam for a couple of hours. We had no illusions about gigging, we just did it for joy and to get better at playing. It was something I looked forward to every week and became fast friends with our drummer.

Well, Gary, our drummer, suddenly fell ill and died within a couple of weeks of that. He was irreplaceable in this trio - he played djemba and conga with cymbals, and could really make it groove - and so the bass player and I didn’t even try to replace him. I miss him like crazy. It’s been a long time and I still do.

Recently I’ve been using the UAFX Enigmatic pedal for all my direct recording, and didn’t have much use for my Boss Katana MKII anymore. So I put the amp up for sale. Zero interest.

In the meantime, I got bored and wondered if anybody in my town could 1: play jazz, and 2: would be interested in playing just for the love of it. I placed a second CL ad explaining what I was looking for in detail. Five bass players, two drummers, three keyboard players answered. And one nibble on the amp, which flaked on me.

So, I’m keeping the amp, and starting a new band! We’re meeting for the first time at the keyboard guys’s house… He has a fully equipped music studio, with a full drum kit, a Hot Rod Deluxe, and full PA. The bass player (who plays fretless) and I just need to bring our axes, and all the drummer needs is sticks.

I’m hoping for a chill group and a good time. Waahoo. Here we go…

Glad to hear you’re getting back with a group. We practice here at my place every Wednesday for 3 hours. Bass player left a bass here, I have a Roland drum kit, and amps/PA. Drummer shows up with just sticks, bass player with his song book, and other guitar player with just a guitar/case.

Jazz on !
