TVvoodoo's Straplab

I consider myself a bit of a craftsman, but when it comes to things made of wood and hardware, I'm really out of my element - I have some tools basically from home reno work and such, but really, when I typically try to build things... well, Homer Simpson's spice rack is fairly indicative! - Guys like @fitz totally floor me!

simpsons-homer.gif

That said, I'm planning to take a road tour this fall with a bunch of straps in my truck and I felt like I needed some extra storage that was somewhat secure in the back. I'm too cheap and/or stubborn to get a tonneau cover, or a bed cap for the ol' ford. And I didn't think I needed that much space... so I took it upon myself to design something that I'm a little bit proud of.

What I wanted was something easily removable, foldable for storage, secure and CHEAP! I had a 2/3 full plastic gas can stolen out out of my truck at wally world earlier this spring, and I needed an "out of sight, out of mind" sort of solution.

I had a couple of old doors stored in my shed, waiting for fifteen years to be made into temporary tables which I never got around to, so I sawed them up to create some big, heavier panels.

qWOWzOUg_o.jpg

I created a hinge with an old banister rail also stored away, and some lag bolts that fit into my headache rack. I can still hang my tow rope and such from the rack too. I plan to store things inside this stowspace inside larger waterproof storage totes likely.

vjK8pihg_o.jpg

The vertical section you can't see here, but it's attached to the top with a couple of old door hinges which fold against the top when you lift it up.

Then, once my idea was assembled, I used my handy-dandy spray can rattler to shake up some old spraybombs hanging around. I absolutely HATE shaking up old rattlecans, new ones too! The #1 number one reason spray can nozzles plug? Not enough shaking. This solves that problem well.

A big old hose clamp on the sawzall works like a charm! A minute of this, she's shook up real good!

Why not send off the ol' redneck / prepper vibe? Maybe I'll add a secured by Smith & Wesson or some
Remington stickers or whatnot on it too.

AKMBzop1_o.jpg

Won't be contacted by popular mechanics on it anytime soon LOL! But it works very well, sturdy, practical and a little bit unique. Here it is in the open position, it all lays nice and flat when open, I can reach in and lift it from outside the bed, though it's pretty heavy!

Just remove one lag bolt where the top hinges and the whole thing lifts out and off.

W6OAYlsN_o.jpg

And, closed for cruisin'. Added a piece of painted trim on the edge, sealed the cracks with half a tube of silicone I needed to use up. It was getting real stiff though.

HQBcefkv_o.jpg

There is a 1.5" platform on the bed inside to keep stuff up and dry, and it also stops the hinging back door from closing inwards. Best part of this? 100% completed with stuff I had laying around in my shop and storage shed. I do think I'm gonna add padlock hasp and padlock "dummy" front and centre giving the appearance it's secured so that's a little bit I will have to spend. But it will just be a dummy set up to give the appearance it's locked.

The dragon straps I showed here on Friday all sold in a day and a half! WOW! Paul, a returning warrior who bought one asked me to make him a custom black/gold/red one to accompany his brown one, - I had a few on the bench already started for later this week, making it pretty easy

It's a holiday weekend up here, so I'm being a bit lazy. Summers are too short!

@GrooVey I wouldn't mind that much at all. I considered a Don't tread on me sort of label, but up here that would likely invite even more interest on what's inside.
I think a simple small decal with FAFO or somesuch is probably ideal.

Weird but fun story:

Paul ordered a Brown and gold dragon strap on Saturday, told me he had the black and red one in his cart a long time ago, but never pulled the trigger and they sold out. I told him I had some black and red ones on the bench for this week, offered a deal on a pair of them, and got one finished on Sunday, and put the Black/Red custom listing up on Reverb for Paul to add to his Brown/Gold package which, due to the holiday weekend, couldn't ship until this morning.

However, Tom who has also been desiring a Black/Red one for quite some time and somehow also knows Paul, (both being absolute players down there in Vegas), in fact, Tom tells me Paul introduced him to the Well-Hung line-up a number of years ago, so both have several of my pieces now.
Anyway, evil buddy Tom saw the custom listing clearly labelled "IF YOU ARE NOT PAUL, DO NOT BUY THIS STRAP!!!" and he bought it anyway. LOL! Because he too has been desiring one long time.

Actually his move turned out to not be evil, but an honest mistake. Came up hot in his feed, he was so hyped he didn't even read the listing just yanked the trigger. Then, he turned rather apologetic finding out it was actually supposed to be for his buddy Paul. So, I had to cancel that order, refund his money and then relist. Sigh.

Anyway, I wanted Tom to be a happy camper like Paul, so I mentioned I had a few more black/red Sum Yung Long Hung Guys on the bench set for completion this week... he immediately affirmed he also wanted one. Good for me! Then I asked him if he preferred slippy? Or grippy? He said he take one of each. Even gooder for me! So his custom order suddenly became today's project

Two single sales morphed into doubles. My customers, you guys, the whole W-h tribe is just that cool!
So, here's Tom's custom pair. ready to ship tomorrow.

do7Ndqnu_o.jpg

Very slippy satin red lining on one of them. But it had to have a bit less padding because the way I pad a strap also really helps with the "stay-put" factor, not just the grippy velvet lining.

Two more Red/Blacks in the store tomorrow, just have to punch holes and such. Happy Tuesday!

I got another No Prisoners done yesterday but was distracted from taking pics and listing it (likely tomorrow),
because I had the strangest wave wash over me that it was time to make a run of Well-Hung "Shakeys"

Not sure if it has anything to do with Young, or possibly world events, but I can tell you there was a definite sort of strange "push" sent to
my to head, hands and heart in this regard. Whatever that may signify, if anything at all- let's hope it might signal good news to come.

I'm a big fan of "listening to the universe," so far it's done me no harm. I don't believe I'm psychic, but there's been fun coincidences.

I don't make these straps often, frankly they are quite a pain... takes about twice as long to make than any others (except for tooled straps),
but one of my best, most-loved by owners. I think it's been a few years now since I had any in the store. Each one is different.

BFMn3Ten_o.jpg

You see while many other makers do something similar, NOBODY sews individual embroidered patches. More often just a quick silk screen sort of thing. I had these patches made special for me, and they are both HOTFIXED in place AND sewn. Gives the strap a whole new level of tactile karma, AND I think Neil would be proud and pleased to wear one if he could ever find me.

His original Peace/Dove strap was an ACE hootenanny type, but somwhere along the line he had somebody modify it from 2" to approx 3" by sewing it to some denim giving it it more surface area and comfort to handle the beastly Ol' Black. Over the years it's become filthy, worn out, ratty and ragged, but also definitely "iconic." I can only hope one of mine is as well-loved in the future and gains some of that kind of mojo.

dCZhdXRvPXdlYnA

Once the patches are sewed onto strips, they are then affixed to extra wide bases. I am also going to pad this particular run of five to an "OVER-STUFFED" level of comfort. When complete they are something else. Hope to complete these five tomorrow. I'm about 65% there.

nqbUkdDb_o.jpg

I also designed and ordered a small metal sign I will screw to my truck box thingy I showed earlier
as well as some sturdy padlock hasp hardware in black

ErRn4kNB_o.jpg

The auction is over, and @Sargeant Prestons winning bid was phenomenal! Congrats! sorry the Saskatoon berries spoiled on the way there.
I am pleased that he is happy with his winnings! I put together quite a package besides just the strap.

I would also like to call out @Don O and @Jethro Rocker for aggressive bids, (and also generous cash contributions to TTR).

Hope Thursday's treatin' all y'alls right, it's also International Lighthouse Day.

As mentioned yesterday, I did get "HammerFall" the latest No Prisoners series strap photographed and listed in the Reverb store.

66lxlln2_o.jpg

Padded, black leather, 3" wide goes to about 59" - about as badass as it gets.

mwquEYM2_o.jpg

Also the first of five new "Shakey" straps... each one is different. Super wide at over 3-1/4", and over-stuffed in regards to padding. You know how at the end of a long day when you settle into your recliner? This is much like how it will feel when that heavy bass settles down on your shoulder.
It's actually closer to a golf bag strap ready to handle 35-40 pounds, Actually would get a lot of comments out on the links.

Jamdogg is a returning warrior from days long ago when I called my little affair "Strap ATTACK!" He tells me the slings I made back in 2012 are still running strong, which is great news to me, because admittedly, the first couple years some of them were a bit sketch, as I was finding my legs LOL!

Happy National Tarantula Day!

Matty (Hazmat777) plays "Slash" in North Carolina based "Shotguns & Roses" He's had a Swamp Bottom Python for a while now, and posted a short vid on instagram, which I have no idea how to embed. But .... here's a rather low rez screencap.

Got a message from Nate the other day who purchased a No Prisoners "Kingmaker" purple gator with bling strap for his ernie ball purple burst bass... Well, strange thing (he said), he bought an identical bass for a backup and wanted another identical strap.

Problem is, the No Prisoners promise is each is unique, individual, never to be copied. He wasn't into commissioning a custom, but I told him I like to have a couple purple themed straps in the store anyway and would get after building a couple he could consider this week. Here's the result

"Kingsman" on the left, and "Purple People Eater" on the right - he'sgot a preview photo, and I'll give him a bit to decide if he wants one, but otherwise both (or the one he doesn't pick) will be live tonight in the reverb store.

GcDBlLeb_o.jpg

Also going live tonight is one of the Shakey straps I completed Friday... this one with charcoal adn black miniature houndstooth all up and down the middle, on black faux leather, 3=1/4" wide and extra long, like 62".

Happy Monday!

Fresh off the factory floor (LOL! just one guy here) a set of three customs for Spencer in Manassas, (what a great place!). Spencer has purchase a few before, but I'm thinking maybe shorter ones, because this set he ordered started at approx 36"-47" in length. That's a bit less than even a factory strap. My regulars are typically 8" longer than most.

Anyway, built custom for him, a Sum Long Hung Yung Guy, a High Society, and a Denim Demon.

Ki45pBEI_o.jpg

I sometimes forget that everyone isn't like me demanding longer straps, but I'm always happy to make custom if folks ask, and I have\
the materials stashed away, (I'm kind of a pack rat, so chances are decent).

pzN9TxJ1_o.jpg

Andrew in North Carolina rolled the dice and picked up a couple for his first trial of Well-Hung slingage. 100% appreciate the trust and the buy-in and he wasn't disappointed. Gotta say through messaging, this dude is one crazy cat! _heathen_projections if you instagram.

Today, is World Elephant Day, so a great day to treat your pet elephant to a nice scrub.

Thank you Groovey... I don't mind whipping up custom versions for straps in the store if folks need longer or shorter.
I've found trying to modify straps doesn't work out to well usually. It's better just to make it again, if I still have the materials.

Today I started a tooling job, a custom for a tall fellow. Some folks here will recognize the pattern. Patrick has a really swell wine red paul he wants
to sling on a wide padded custom strap. However, he maintains he needs up to 67", but 63 is his home position! Extraordinarily long!

zikk2vowie6pf7vlcvbl.jpg

after some discussion... my old Ace of spades series tickled his fancy, with some modifications something like this one... something I made quite a wayws back in 2021 - This new one now started today will be #9

PX84udyX_o.jpg

So, here we go! First some technical stuff. He wanted my Ace of Spades sawtooth to stop before it hit bottom, like all the others do... and for me to tool in a much larger version of the stamp as best I can ... requiring a bit of computerin'

cM6P2NPm_o.jpg

Gotta digitally enlarge it, so I can trace it onto the leather. Then commence with the arbor press - I actually need this 2 ton press to get the impressions... hammering alone just won't do it with stamps with a lot of surface area. Even gotta put a snipe on the press handle besides and put all my weight on it too! It's actually pretty hard work.

oX5SpANe_o.jpg

Then, trace in and swivel knife in the larger representation...

While it's still sligtly damp... first dye stage. My red dye seems to be getting a bit old, I think it might take a couple of applications. I want it richer yet. It's gonna darken down with antiquing, some black burst effects and clearcoat too. But overall, the plan is to creep up on the right colours and how he wants it. Skull looks kind of wierd, but it'll be ok once it's all finished.

bho7rNQn_o.jpg

New in the store today, another Shakey, this one with super faded denim. 45-62" wide and padded.

Happy hump day!

The work on Ace of Spades #9 continues...

Later last night I hit it with red dye again, then neatsfoot oil to drag it a bit deeper into the hide
at this point when it's wet with oil you can get a nice preview of the colour when clearcoated...
but this is still way to bright for where we are headed-
a250glom_o.jpg

But... it's far easier to darken leather shades than it is to lighten them!
This morning I commenced to shielding all the items I wanted to stay this colour with a resist coating - this means all the tiny little skulls the sawtooth down the middle, and parts of the front carved element. Let that dry for a few hours then hit it all with the darkest antique paste I have

Yechh!

x55WAZOe_o.jpg

Scrubbed it into all the nooks and crannies, waited twenty beats then wiped it all off.

jns9CBc0_o.jpg

I let that dry a set for an hour and a half, buffed it out, then started with some black over-dye lightly by hand to bring it even deeper/darker/scarier,
and get into the tooled aces a bit better along the sides.

9EOm3XdQ_o.jpg

Discussing with Patrick, we have decided I need to darken it down just a tad more, which will happen later tonight after I run some errands.
It's all burnished now too, the edges.

today new in the store is another Shakey - the Indigo one. 44-62" wide, long, luxuriously padded.

XZJc95RL_o.jpg

More to come tomorrow... weekend is coming! And so is my wife... I've been batchin' it since Sunday, but so far I've watched Robocop,
The good the Bad and the Ugly, and last night Bloodsport. a bunch of movies I've never seen, but it was time to get em off the movie bucket list

A couple of Hipsters entered the Well-Hung Reverb store today...

Hipster #1

Hipster #2

stuZhzn4_o.jpg

this is old reclaimed leather from my "leather library" salvaged about a dozen years ago, from a ladies skirt. I don't know what guitar it might go on, but it's got all kinds of earthy vintage mojo that I'm sure folks are gonna ask you about!

Went a step darker yet with Ace #9 - still waiting to hear back from Patrick on where we are going with it.

ObBEy6JA_o.jpg

I think I'm going to resist going any darker at this point. But it's pretty dang cool!

Sayeth Bry: "A couple of completely gorgeous straps in the wild: a "Forever Randy" supporting a RR V, and "Braveheart" holding back a Spector bass. Amazing craftsmanship... beautiful work, always get asked about them. Unique designs that'll be cherished, always in our stables and more than likely handed down through generations, plus more to be added! Was finally able to get a couple pics of them in action, thank you Brad"

Woweee!! Always love to see my work at work on stages big or small, even bedroom players, gear caves too! Don't be afraid to send pics!

Monday, Monday... can't trust that day.

For whatever reason despite that, things seemed to go ok! Got this one all stitched up, and ready for delivery.
Ace of Spades #9 - hard to believe I've already made nine of these, haven't punched one of these out since 2022.
I've made this one various colour combos, black on black, classic burst, green and gold, vintage sunburst...

WxzwNAvp_o.jpg

In this case I think it's gonna match up just fine . Second LONGEST strap I've ever made though.... goes up to 73" Patrick says he wants it to sit at 67" comfortably.
With that amount of extra material, a fair bit of extra work all around, but dang it if it didn't turn kind of impressive in a dark and scary way.

That one off the bench, and new tooling custom job for Brian who was so smitten with the last one I made for, he ordered up another for a flying V. He's looking for "Bouquet #3" to be in a nice light saddle tan with a bit of colour variation. It's also going to be a bit skinnier than I normally like to make, so I won't be able to pad it to quite to my liking, but he says his V is super light and wanted to keep it low profile.

o1N7JqlV_o.jpg

This is fresh off two hours of stamping - just finished giving it a good yellow base dye, I'll let it sit until tonight and see how that looks before proceeding.
This one will continue most of this week, and I have another tooling job starting Wednesday too. Might get it started a bit tomorrow.

Stay tuned, lots of fun this week if you dig this sort of stuff.
