I got my Les Paul Custom in 1973 also a music store close to my grandmothers house in 1977 my car was stolen and my guitar and ampAh, I thought the '54 reissues had the staple pickup and the '56 reissues had a regular P90 at the neck.
Must be the other way round.
I bought one with the staple in '73, all mahog with a beautifully honky bridge tone and a singing neck voice.
Sadly, it was stolen. I pined for that guitar for decades until I got a replacement.
