What a difference a pick makes…

I’ve been using Gravity Picks (the Razer model) in the Big Mini size (about half way between an ordinary pick and Jazz III), and I love ‘em. I’ve got a couple of 1.5mm thickness picks and a couple of 2.0mm, which I prefer.

I was ordering strings at Stringjoy and decided to have them throw a couple of their new acrylic picks in the envelope. I like a sharp tip so I went with their sharpest model in a 1.5 thickness.

Well, I got them and they are a bit larger than my Big Minis, which throws off my picking horribly. So now I’m trying to decide if I just toss these in the Justin Case, or play them until I’m used to the size change. I really like acrylic picks, and my Gravity picks are starting to lose their polished bevel.

Yeah a different pick really throws me off, I hate thin flimsy picks.
I can deal with the teardrop shapes but have used the triangular pointy ones for so many decades now, hard to use anything else. Either the glow i the dark custom printed or white Fender 346 heavy. White are easier to see on dark stage floors.

When it comes to picks, I'm picky. I have tried Jazz III, and many many types and thicknesses. But I still come back to my Ego custom made picks .96 Celluloid, flexible enough for strumming, but firm enough for biting in for leads, but once that tip is gone , its on to a new one. The ones that look a little yellowish glo in the dark. Great for a dark stage.

Before i ordered my custom picks. 5 years ago, my Wife and i went into Long&McWade to buy some picks, there was two guys at the counter, the one guy said can i help you, i said yes i am looking for some picks. He said any kind in particular, My Wife said a pick is just a pick, the two guys and myself said no way! all at the same time! It was hilarious, you had to been there.

So every time i see or here of picks. I am taken back to that moment.:D

I used those or the .72 (if I recall the number) for donkey’s years. I’m a fairly recent convert (the last decade) to heavier picks. I feel that I play cleaner and more “mindfully,” for want of a better word, since I went 1.5-2.0mm.
I make too may "other" noises with a heavier pick. My playing sounds a bit nicer or uncluttered with that particular pick. Maybe it's the material. The Fender Mediums I used for years just didn't sound good to me any more. I always liked the Gibson Mediums because the plastic seemed a bit more rubbery, but no one carries those around here. I can't use the Fender or Gibson Thins. I'll just break those.

I definitely agree the material makes a difference. That's why I like the Gator Grips, they last a long time and don't break. I also don't like slick picks at all, I can't hang on to them and they spin on me.
