On a Les Paul I tend to like top hats, but reflectors on SGs. And then there is Greeny:

I am just not a Top Hat lover on anything honestly. Reflectors or Speed knobbers on my Gibson's please. On an oldy I may want witch hats.

Not sure why but the Top Hats just look more like they should be on that guitar to me, whereas I would prefer the look of reflectors or witch hats on an SG or a 335.
Either way I think it looks smokin' hot anyway!

Wow heading into the weekend Top hats are starting to pull away 10 votes to 5. I'm a little surprised there isn't more love for the reflectors.

I already have the pointers. Nice pic by the way! Check out my Randy tribute strap

Super Neat!!!!

On the 20th anniversary of Randy's passing, I met his Mom and presented her with a short instrumental I wrote and recorded in Randy's honor. She gave me the grand tour of Randy's home at 931 Amherst in Burbank...Moving to say the least.

Not to mention it is one of only a handful of times I have ever played an acoustic.

Like the piece! Short and sweet. I need to post some stuff soon too. Working on Judas Priest Rapid Fire. Not as sweet.

I really like pointers.
In my day they were called wrist slashers and were frequently the first things replaced. For some reason I kept the original knobs and pointers from my ES-225TD in the kit box and the subsequent owner has never restored them to the guitar. To me they are an interesting anachronism, rather more functional than the instructional switch chip, as though I can't remember which is RHYTHM and which is TREBLE.

Bartender, another Cuba libre with a beer chaser and a bowl of nachos. The mosquitoes are coming out. The bats must surely follow.

I got sidetracked and just realized I haven't had a chance to come back and post how things turned out. I was a little surprised there was so much more love for the Top Hats and in my honest opinion that is what I know and love. That's why I have decided to stay with Reflectors. Yep.

You see, i have been wrong twice on this guitar before by going with my gut. At first I didn't like the VOS scheme but I have come to really love it. I then was all about ripping out the pickups because they were not what I expected. But instead I tried some adjustments and have them sounding pretty good as well. So because I know I would love to see it with Top Hats, I also will believe deep down in my heart Reflectors are probably the right choice for it. A wise man (actually just RVA) once told me sometimes just because the guitar doesn't look or sound exactly like we expected to, we are quick to make changes but if we give it some time we might end up really loving it. That so far has been true for me with this guitar.

A couple of benefits of the Reflectors I have found:
1. It clearly helps identify it as a 1960 vs a 58 or even a 59 (if you can find any modern plaintops anymore).
2. They also sit lower to the body than I was able to get the top hats without reaming them. I don't like knobs that stick up high off the body.

oh and there's another worthwhile possibility that I installed for a short time:
DOME KNOBS! No one has mentioned these, but I know I'm not the only one who
has installed them.

I liked them mostly because they weren't plastic. *shrugs
But I replaced them with top hats that went 0-11...
and THAT has made all the difference. Tone is MUCH better now...
