Our choices seem to be getting harder and harder.
This time, two English groups both could be considered grandfathers of progressive rock.

deep purple vs floyd.jpg

No music collection complete without samples of both of these, but perhaps one more than the other.
One group definitely had the harder rock bite in the music, while the other bit harder lyrically, thematically.

In effect, possibly this could be a battle against a band who cranked out killer songs, vs another who was able
to sculpted concept albums that could be a bit dreary on the whole, but always featured hot spots.

A difficult task to rate these bands against each other musically. it might come down to other reasons for
each of us.

I love them both. I've seen PF 5 or 6 times and Gilmour solo once. Never got to see DP.
My heart is with Pink Floyd, and thus is my vote.

Deep Purple has all the ingredients of a band I should love. But I don't for some reason.
I do still listen to some of the early Pink Floyd albums (can't f-ing stand The Wall though) so gotta go with them.

Actually , I consider my collection somewhat complete with out half of the bands on the list.
Most of it gets played on the radio everyday.

These are getting harder to choose.
Another pair of different, but great bands.
There's not much I don't like about either band.
I voted Pink Floyd by a narrow personal preference margin.
But, in my mind, either band goes no further in the bracket....

I was dreading this one.

When I consider these matchups, I try to insert myself in the time period and consider which band was more influential then. Now, I did grow up in the '70s, but I was just in elementary and middle school. So, I do have to try to reeducate myself on that time.

Also, I try not to let my personal preferences dictate my choices. I can't say I've been entirely successful at this, but I try to make that my goal. Then again, I'm not very emotional about music anyway. Sure, I really enjoy playing it and learning new things, but I'm not highly emotionally attached to any group or style of music. I don't have any deep-seated, visceral love or hatred for genres or bands. I have preferences, but they're just that: preferences.

So, do I go with the Pink or the Purple? I have a preference toward each band for different reasons. Though he can be somewhat of a moody sort, Ritchie Blackmore is a great guitar player and created one of the the most, if not THE most, iconic riff in all of rock music: Smoke on the Water. As he explains it, it is an inversion of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. Of course, I truly admire the input from the rest of the band, especially the Mark II lineup.

Then we have Pink Floyd. Another Brick In The Wall became a virtual anthem for school kids everywhere. And, whereas I am partial to the work of Eric Johnson, David Gilmour created what I consider to be the best guitar solo ever. That is, the solo and outro in Comfortably Numb.

Essentially, you have two bands with fantastic musicians and songwriting, and both bands had significant influences on the culture of the time.

What am I to do with this? Personally, I do prefer Deep Purple to Pink Floyd, but I can't really explain why. However, Floyd was more experimental and explored more musical territory than Purple. By some accounts, Deep Purple had more commercial success. But, to me, I think Pink Floyd had more of an influence by the end of the decade than Deep Purple had earlier. That, unfortunately, is just a gut feeling. So, whereas I do tend to prefer Deep Purple, I am going to very reluctantly cast my vote for Pink Floyd.

I had no idea some of these votes were going to be this close, dividing TTR members into two camps,
and I wonder how often the two sides are similar for each vote.

I voted Pink Floyd here. While I give the slight edge in musical virtuosity to Deep Purple, that's not what rings my bell.
Thematically, lyrics, the 1970's period gave us the rise of the progressive rock concept album, after The Beatles,
The Stones, the Who, pioneered the format. While Floyd was deep into psychedelic music during that same period,
it can be argued they didn't release a full-on concept package until DSOTM. But after that, 1973, they were unstoppable,
and untoppable, by their musical peers of the time.

It takes a little more gumption, drive and artistry to forge a conceptual album, storytelling via an audio movie, and allowing
us to kick back with the cans for a side at a time, to enter a completely new world. Pink Floyd did it extremely well, giving
us a mix of ballads, and rockers, always stylistically diverse and extremely creative.

Dark Side of the Moon along is a modern musical masterpiece, and the total sum of Deep Purple's work pales against it.

Again, Alan Parsons had a strong hand in DSOTM, which I feel I need to mention. He's like the unmentioned fella who
deserves much credit for helping pull it together, and Floyd took that engineering/production style, expanded on it, and
it became their formula for continued success later on

To be fair, I think it's more like two circles with a lot of overlap. In many of these contests, several people - myself included - have labored over which choice to make because we actually liked both choices, but eventually leaned slightly one way or the other.

Follow the money, your own. Go count the number of albums and CDs you own for each band from that time era. We voted with our $ back then, no mp3 or Spotify.

I dunno about that. In Round 1, I voted for Pink Floyd and Deep Purple solely based on FM radio. I like 'em both and I don't own a single album or CD by either band.
I'm going with Pink Floyd again.
