These are really tough.
I dig Deep Purple, respect their influence, and listened to them a good bit. They are / were better musicians as well.
But they were a little before my time (though I did listen to Perfect Strangers a lot as a young adult).
The first 8-track I ever opened up and tried to repair was Machine Head.

My first deep dive into music as a younger teen was The Beatles. Still very dear to me, especially the pre Sgt. Pepper era.
Then I started getting some Kiss and other records and 8 tracks, and yeah - kick ass rock and roll. I didn't love the make up thing but understood it was part of the stage show / marketing, and didn't hate it.

First concert I ever saw was KISS at Madison Square Garden sometime in the mid '70's. Smoke coming out of Ace's guitar during solo - EPIC!!
My uncle Rick took me, he was around the NYC music scene and had seen KISS in local bars several times before they got big.
I remember him telling me their make up used to run into quite a mess from sweating.

So, because I dig blue collar rock songs like Detroit Rock City (though I don't approve of the drinking and driving thing), and never really liked the heavy electric organ component of Deep Purple, I voted KISS.

Haha, nope. I think the songs are cheesy, I can't stand Paul's voice and Gene is a total ass'ole. I always thought Ace was cool/funny, I wish the original band was still intact, but I doubt it would change my opinion if it was.
As far as Kiss goes, the old fans were way back for the first 4 releases, Alive also Destroyer but after that?

Kiss for me, by a mile. Blackmore is great and all but he's very affected, very boorish, and turned into a world-class weirdo. Ace is the guy that sold a million (or more) guitars in the '70s and had a truly unique style that didn't lean so heavily on blues, for once, thank god. I still listen to Kiss regularly, have not spun a DP record on purpose in many a year.

Just a side note, for some of these contests, I read comments before voting. For others, I'll see the thread title and just dive in with my first post and cast my vote; then, I go back and read comments. This contest was the latter.

Regardless, I do enjoy reading the viewpoints of others, whether or not they voted the same way as me.

Exactly. And those first 5, arguably 6, Kiss albums stand on their own, with or without the makeup and explosions. They are benchmark hard rock albums that didn't need the theatrics, but benefitted from them anyway.

Well I cast my vote maybe it was the nostalgia of putting the needle down on the destroyer lp i had dug out of my parents closet at the age of 9 because i wanted to know who the weird guys were on the cover of alive 1 and seeing gene spitting blood on the back cover of alive 2 .
Yup. Alive literally changed my life. Now I have played guitar for 46 years.
Purple, though fantastic, didn't.

So I took my ball and went home. :p
